Delegates to the 53rd Directing Council of the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) were briefed today on the Ebola in West Africa and chikungunya in the Americas, both rapidly spreading epidemics that show the importance of public health preparedness and response.

Washington, D.C., 9 August 2014 (PAHO/WHO) – The Pan American Health Organization/World Health Organization (PAHO/WHO) is urging the countries of the Americas to be vigilant and prepared for a potential introduction of the Ebola virus in the Region. The recommendation comes following a statement by WHO Director-General Margaret Chan that the outbreak in West Africa constitutes a “public health emergency of international concern” (PHEIC).
Given the current situation of Ebola virus disease (EVD) in West Africa, the Pan American Health Organization / World Health Organization (PAHO/WHO) advises its Member States to remain vigilant for potential introduction of EVD in the Americas, to raise the awareness and knowledge of health care providers and to strengthen the implementation of standard precautions for infection prevention and control in health care facilities at all levels
