The West and Central Africa region has experienced severe flooding in the 2017 rainy season, causing significant material and human casualties. A combination of swollen rivers and high impact incidents has led to destruction of infrastructure and agricultural assets, population displacement, and complications for access and relief assistance.

Three weeks on from the landslide and initial flooding, most pillars are operational and the Office of National Security (ONS) Situation Room collates information from the two temporary shelters sites and six Incident Response Centres (IRCs) daily. The second shelter site, Juba Barracks, is still empty ten days after the initial set-up and the slow pace of construction is worrying.

15 PERSONNES TUÉES ET 8 ENLEVÉES PRÈS DE KOLOFATA

Dans la nuit du 24 août, des membres présumés de Boko Haram ont attaqué le village de Gakara, juste à la sortie de la ville de Kolofata, près de la frontière nigériane, tuant 15 personnes et en kidnappant 8 autres, selon une déclaration officielle le 25 août. Les assaillants ont incendié environ 30 maisons. Kolofata accueille de nombreux déplacés et la zone est devenue la cible d'attentats suicides fréquents, limitant ainsi l'accès à l'aide humanitaire.

15 KILLED AND 8 KIDNAPPED NEAR KOLOFATA

Suspected Boko Haram militants attacked Gakara village just outside the town of Kolofata, near the Nigerian border, on the night of 24 August, killing 15 people and kidnapping 8 others, officials said on 25 August. The attackers burned down around 30 houses. Kolofata hosts a large displaced population but the area has become a frequent target of suicide bombings, thus constraining access to humanitarian aid.

Through satellite and real time analysis it has been confirmed that landslides occurred on the morning of August 14th, with the debris from Mount Sugar Loaf resulting in 496 fatalities and roughly 800 missing persons.

• The UN Disaster Assessment and Coordination (UNDAC) has been deployed on Friday 18 September for an initial period of three weeks to support the ongoing assessments, coordination and reporting efforts.

• By 19 August, UNFPA will have finalised inventory information on the stock status at the Central Medical Store level. The results of the inventory status will be compared with findings of the rapid assessment to inform procurement of reproductive health commodities

Situation overview

• Heavy rain is still falling regularly over Freetown, making removal of debris and search for missing persons difficult. The risk of further landslides is not excluded and the Government, with the support of UNOPS, WFP and FAO, is conducting an analysis of at risk areas, most specifically a 2D and 3D mapping of the hills in Sugar Loaf neighbourhoods. The Government may recommend evacuation of additional areas, with the number of displaced people subsequently increasing.

Terror attack kills at least 18 people
On 13 August, gunmen stormed a restaurant in the capital Ouagadougou and killed 18 people, and wounding 22 others, according to the government. Two attackers were killed. A similar attack on a nearby cafe in January 2016 killed 30 people.

  • Torrential rains have led to a series of significant floods and mudslides on 14 August in several areas of Freetown, the capital of Sierra Leone. Emergency support is being provided for the two different types of responses: floods and mudslides.

  • According to Freetown Mayor, rescue workers have recovered 270 bodies so far, mainly from the Regent neighborhood where the mudslide happened. As rescue operations are still ongoing, the death toll is expected to rise.
