Freetown, 9 October, 2017 - While thousands continue to feel the impact of the flooding and mudslide that claimed hundreds of lives on 14 August, the Government of Sierra Leone has been working with United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) to advocate risk-awareness at every level.

Just more than a month after flooding and a mudslide killed hundreds and displaced thousands, many communities remain steadfast, in affected and high-risk areas around Freetown.

Today, a small group of young men is hard at work, shoveling sand into bags and building a barrier in the narrow space between the recently-flooded river and the endless cluster of homes along its banks.

As recovery rolls out one month after the emergency response to the 14 August landslide and floods, UNDP will continue to work with the Government of Sierra Leone moving towards sustainable and inclusive risk informed development.

What have we done?

UNDP has provided technical and practical support to the Office of National Security (ONS), donating computers, generators, rain gear, printers, stationery, communication cards and furniture that enabled first responders in the immediate rescue efforts of emergency coordination centers.

Following the torrential rains in the early hour of Monday 14th July, 2017 which caused massive mudslide and flooding that lead to the death of more than 400 people, UNDP is responding to the emergency with a dual focus – early recovery and prevention.

Presumed the worst flooding incident in West Africa for almost two decades, the tragedy has affected more than 5000 residents including infants in 16 communities in Freetown. Motormeh, a mountainous community in Regent, adjacent Mount Sugar Loaf, is the worst affected community.

In Sierra Leone, volunteers were trained in safety procedures that replaced the traditional high-risk burial practices, and worked in ‘Safe and Dignified Burial’ teams. Many were ostracized by their communities but thanks to the support of the Ebola Multi-Partner Trust Fund, they were able to successfully reintegrate.

UNDP and the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, with support from the Government of Finland, helped the volunteers to develop skills to be able to make a living, as well as providing counselling and training.

When twenty- two-year-old Fatmata Sawyer was asked to identify potential hazards affecting her small village of under 300 residents, she took the microphone and boldly mentioned flash floods, thunderbolts, wildfires, teenage pregnancy and environmental degradation.

Fatmata is among 6 female participants in a three-day training workshop on Disaster Risk Management from M’bokie village, Sittia chiefdom- Bonthe District south of Sierra Leone. Sittia is predominantly a fishing community along the coastlines of Sierra Leone.

Au nom du Bureau régional pour l’Afrique du PNUD, j’ai le plaisir de présenter le deuxième Rapport sur le développement humain en Afrique, consacré à la concrétisation accélérée de l’égalité des genres sur le continent.

L’égalité des genres n’est pas une priorité de développement nouvelle pour les pays d’Afrique. Son importance est depuis longtemps reconnue à l’échelle du continent.

Freetown November 28, 2016: The 2016 African Human Development Report (AHDR) launched today offers pathways to reducing the persistent gender inequality in Africa.

The report titled “Accelerating Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment in Africa,” highlights deeply-rooted structural obstacles such as unequal distribution of resources, power and wealth, combined with social institutions and norms that sustain inequality holding African women, and the rest of the continent, back.

Two of Sierra Leone’s Ebola hardest hit districts have benefitted from a new USD 1.5 million project to help improve their livelihood and basic services in rural communities on November 18, 2016.

The initiative, launched by the Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, Hon Maya Kaikai, is part of the government's post Ebola recovery strategy aimed at giving power to the local communities to be at the helm of decision-making process on development and basic services delivery.
