1 Under the chairmanship of H.E. Macky Sall, President of the Republic of Senegal and current Chair of the Authority, the Heads of State and Government of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) held their Forty-Eighth Ordinary Session on 16 and 17 December 2015 in Abuja, Federal Republic of Nigeria. The Session was followed by a ceremony to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the creation of the organization.

Ancien premier ministre du Burkina Faso, Roch Marc Kaboré a été élu président à la suite d’élections pacifiques tenues le 29 novembre. Ce sont les premières élections depuis l’abandon forcé du pouvoir de Blaise Compaoré suite à des protestations populaires en octobre 2014. Le scrutin a parachevé une transition politique qui a été marquée par des tensions et un coup d’état de courte durée.

La Sierra Leone déclare la fin de l’épidémie Ebola

Ce samedi 07 novembre est déclarée la fin de l’épidémie Ebola en Sierra Leone, après une lutte de plus de 18 mois. Plus de 2 500 volontaires Croix-Rouge ont joué un rôle décisif, prenant toutes les mesures nécessaire pour stopper la transmission du virus : sensibilisation des populations, mais aussi surveillance, désinfection, soutien psychosocial, et aussi, hélas, gestion des cadavres en toute sécurité.

HIGHLIGHTS

• The West Africa 2015 growing season developed under an evolving El Nino event that will peak in late 2015. This region tends to have seasonal rainfall deficits in the more marginal areas during El Nino seasons.

• Accordingly, the first stages of the season (until mid July) were marked by pronounced rainfall deficits leading to delays in the start of the growing season and poor conditions for early crop development. This affected a wide region extending from Senegal, across Burkina and northern Nigeria, to Chad and eastern Niger.

The government has ordered the dismantling and disarmament of the presidential guards and frozen the assets of the coup leader.

KEY MESSAGES

• February to April rainfall estimates (RFE) indicate that the onset of rains occurred earlier than normal this season with generally above normal rainfall levels in the bi-modal zone, as well as the southern part of the Guinean-Sudanian zone. According to medium term forecasts, an on time or early onset of the rains is expected for the northern part of the Guinean-Sudanian zone.
