CHAPTER 1: MIGRANT STOCK BASELINE

During October – November 2017 DTM Libya’s Mobility Tracking identified 432,574 migrants* across all 22 mantikas (regions) in Libya. Migrants were identified in 99 baladiyas and 531 muhallas.

On 1 November, IOM assisted 167 stranded Nigerien migrants, including 48 women, 40 children and 79 men, to return home to Niger from southern Libya.

The Community Stabilization Programme brought the Southern Heritage Festival for Peace to Twaiwa Village on 15 November.

IOM has offered two mobile-phones for the 32 women who escaped from the Islamic State in Sirte, with more interventions planned.

IOM Libya’s Displacement Tracking Matrix (DTM) has released its fourth Flow Monitoring Analytical report.

Situation Overview

At the request of the Government of Sierra Leone and in coordination with the Libyan authorities and the Sierra Leonean embassy, IOM has helped 35 Sierra Leonean migrants stranded in Libya to voluntarily return home from the south of the country.

IOM worked with a local NGO partner to bring the migrants to Tripoli from the southern city of Sabha. In Tripoli it provided arranged exit visas and arranged their travel home on a commercial flight.

GENEVA, October 15 (UNHCR) - UN High Commissioner for Refugees António Guterres has held talks with UNHCR's main partner in Libya on the pressing issue of ensuring protection for refugees and asylum-seekers caught in mixed migration flows from Africa to Europe.

Each year, thousands of people from sub-Saharan Africa risk their lives to reach Libya, where they hope to board smuggler's boats for the perilous journey across the Mediterranean to Europe.
