GENEVA, Dec. 26 (UNHCR) - They returned by foot or occasionally on horseback. They came jammed in pickups, on motor scooters and buses. Groups of families surrounded by donkeys, suitcases, satellite dishes and huge wooden beams from their old homes, perched precariously atop convoys of trucks resembling overcrowded fairground gondolas swathed in a kaleidoscope of colors.

Geneva (ICRC) - The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) today presented its priorities and funding requirements for 2003, appealing for nearly one billion Swiss francs for humanitarian work in some 80 countries. The budget submitted to representatives of donor countries in Geneva includes 788.8 million francs for field expenditure and 149.9 million francs to fund the work of ICRC headquarters in Geneva.

GENEVA -- Donor governments on Tuesday pledged another $280 million towards UNHCR's worldwide programs for 2003, bringing the total promised contributions to date to a record $317 million. This amounts to nearly one- third of the refugee agency's 2003 total projected needs of more than $1 billion.

At a Headquarters press briefing today, Carolyn M. McAskie, Deputy Emergency Relief Coordinator in the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), announced the launch of the Inter-agency Consolidated Appeals for 2003. Being held in capitals around the world, the Appeals are $3 billion for 50 million beneficiaries in countries experiencing humanitarian crises.
