  • On April 16, IOM participated in the official closing ceremony marking the end of the micro-quarantine at Koropara, in the Forest Guinea, where the latest EVD cases in the country resurfaced in mid-March 2016. The Minister of health, Dr. Abdourahmane Diallo, the National Coordinator, Dr. Sakoba Keita, the EU Ambassador, Mr. Gielen, the IOM Chief of Mission Representative, Dr. Blaise Bathondoli, participated in the ceremony.

The Ebola outbreak in West Africa was unprecedented in its sheer scale. The outbreak occurred close to the confluence of the borders between Guinea, Sierra Leone and Liberia, where movement of people between countries is regular and often not controlled.

Situation

  • The 29 March 2016, WHO declared the end of the Public Health Emergency of International Concern regarding the EVD outbreak in West Africa although, as expected, new clusters continue to occur.

  • A new cluster of Ebola cases has been detected in the village of Koropara, near N’Zerekore in Forest Guinea. As of 30 March, there are five confirmed and three probable cases. Out of these, seven have died.

A few days later, two other people developed the same symptoms. The tests, carried out on March 17, were positive to the Ebola Virus Disease, indicating the resurgence of the disease in Guinea, nearly three months after it was officially declared over by WHO

« La neuvième réunion du Comité d'urgence sur Ebola qui a eu lieu aujourd'hui m'a informé que la situation d'Ebola en Afrique de l'Ouest ne constitue plus une urgence de santé publique de portée internationale », a dit Dr. Chan lors de ce point de presse.

GUINEA

Guinea was declared free of Ebola the 28th of December 2015. MSF is now running an Ebola clinic for survivors in Conakry. In February, there were 126 psychological consultations and 181 medical consultations at the clinic. In addition to this, the MSF team also carries out sensitization activities at the clinic and in the community.
