At the height of the Ebola crisis, Sierra Leone turned to mobile wallets to make fast, accurate, and secure payments to Response Workers. Before digitization, cash payments were slow, inaccurate, and open to graft and theft.

Digitization cut payment times from over one month to around one week, putting an end to payment-related strikes. In doing so, digital payments strengthened Sierra Leone’s capacity to contain the Ebola disease, treat those infected, and ultimately save lives.

  • February marks the end of the rice cultivation season and peak agricultural activity in the region. Household food security levels measured through the rCSI are virtually identical to those measured in December 2015.

  • In Liberia and Sierra Leone, the average national rCSIs have improved since last year, February 2015. In Guinea, the rCSI has also improved compared to June 2015.

  • In October, coping improved in Liberia and less broadly in Guinea and Sierra Leone.

  • A few commodity price changes were detected this month, including a decrease in the price of local rice and an increase in palm oil. This corresponds with respondents’ reports of food availability during the current harvest.
