The 2015 Comprehensive Food Security and Vulnerability Analysis (CFSVA) was conducted at a time when the Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) epidemic started to recede in Sierra Leone. Data was collected using smart phones between September and October 2015, at the end of the “lean season” when the rains are heavy and frequent, roads become inaccessible (limiting people’s ability to access markets) and food stocks become depleted.

Review of literature and identification of case studies for evidence on youth mobilisation and technology. What mobile phone interventions or social media have been used by young people effectively to improve development outcomes for: a) accountability and transparency such as through the collection, monitoring and use of data b) improving delivery of essential services for young people (such as education or SRHR) c) promoting positive lifestyle choices and behavioural change, and d) supporting humanitarian service delivery in crisis situations.

1. Background

The Ebola outbreak in 2014 and 2015 in West Africa and the repercussions it had at international level have substantially changed our perception and understanding of global health security. In this context, DG SANTE, together with the Luxembourg Presidency, organised a conference on "lessons learned for public health from the Ebola outbreak in West Africa – how to improve preparedness and response in the EU for future outbreaks”.

The event took place in Mondorf-les-Bains (Luxembourg) from Monday 12 October to Wednesday 14 October 2015.
