17 October 2012, Rome - FAO will provide Sierra Leone with technical assistance to improve the country's capacity to anticipate, plan for and respond to food security and nutrition threats under a two-year project signed here today.
The project will focus on development of information network systems and human resources to facilitate food security planning, implementation, monitoring and evaluation.
1) With seasonal rains ending and as vegetation dries out, locust swarms have formed in Chad and are expected to form shortly in Niger and Mali. Swarms are then expected to migrate towards the north as well as potentially into cropping areas in western/central Mali.

Internationally supported statebuilding processes offer an opportunity to address engrained gender inequalities and develop a state that is accountable to women. However, international statebuilding support has so far been largely gender blind, with the result that such opportunities are often missed.
A total of 21 986 cases and 292 deaths (CFR: 1.33%) reported from 12 out of 13 districts.
The Ministry of Health and Sanitation (MOHS) continues to work closely with partners at the national and international levels to maintain the response to the ongoing cholera outbreak. Twelve of the 13 districts in Sierra Leone have been affected since the beginning of the year.
FREETOWN, 16 October 2012 (IRIN) - Dandling her malnourished baby at a clinic in a Freetown slum, a Sierra Leonean mother says she has never heard of exclusive breastfeeding, but observes `banfa’ - a traditional practice where women abstain from sex as long as they are breastfeeding because they believe that sex during that period endangers the child’s health.

FREETOWN, 11 October 2012 (IRIN) - Many Sierra Leonean women who are unable to repay small debts end up in prison for want of decent legal representation after their creditors report them to the police, meaning that civil disputes turn into criminal cases.
An estimated 10 percent of all charges issued by the Sierra Leonean police involve the failure to repay small debts.
