ABIDJAN, 31 December (IRIN) - Disarmament of former rebel fighters resumed on Sunday in Kenema District in eastern Sierra Leone after the process had stalled for just over a week due to unrest in the area, deputy UN Mission in Sierra Leone spokesman Patrick Coker told IRIN on Monday.

Child Protection

UNICEF provided financial support to child protection partners for the annual street children's party, which was held at the Victoria Park in Freetown. Over 1,000 children from 10 organizations attended the party. Approximately 100 disabled children from the Blind School, Deaf School and the Polio Association were among the participants. The party was organized by the Western Area Street Children's Task Force headed by Don Bosco (a local Catholic Non-Governmental Organization).

INTRODUCTION
This is the third and final issue in 2001 of this quarterly report prepared by the FAO Global Information and Early Warning System (GIEWS) on the food supply situation, cereal import and food aid requirements for all countries in sub-Saharan Africa. The report is designed to provide the latest analysis and information on the food situation in these countries to governments, international organizations and other institutions engaged in humanitarian operations.

Sierra Leone, peaceful

The overall security situation around the country has remained calm but for growing tensions along Sierra Leone's border with Liberia. This has resulted into the stepping up UNAMSIL patrolling in the border area. The new patrolling approach includes extensive use of MI-24 gunship helicopters.

Monrovia (dpa) - Security forces are harassing people in northwestern Liberia, leading to a mass exodus of citizens to neighbouring Sierra Leone and other parts of the county, an official said Friday.

"We have been informed by our citizens that where there is no presence of dissidents in these areas, security officers have advised them to leave their towns and villages indicating these areas are not safe," said James Lomei, the district spokesman for Porkpa and Gola Konneh.

The American Refugee Committee began operating in Sierra Leone in 2000 to help the people rebuild their lives and their country after a decade of civil war. The conflict led to great destruction and a widespread displacement of people. Many civilians were abused, including those who were victims of amputations by rebel groups.

ABIDJAN, 21 December (IRIN) - Persistent tension that followed clashes this week between government troops and armed opposition fighters in northern Liberia's Lofa County forced 3,446 people - including over 3,000 Sierra Leonean refugees - to move to Jenemana in Gbarpolu County, just south of Lofa, UNHCR said in a report on Friday. The displaced people were moving towards the capital, Monrovia, it added.

Freetown - The United Nations Mission in Sierra Leone (UNAMSIL), yesterday, chaired a successful conciliatory meeting with Kono elders, representatives of the Revolutionary United Front - RUF, Civil Defence Force and Kono Youths, to resolve the recent clashes in Koidu town. The meeting identified indiscriminate mining and revenue collection as the remote cause of the clashes.
