West Africa can be divided into three agro-ecological zones or three different trade basins (West Basin, Central Basin and East Basin). Both important for understanding market behavior and dynamics.
By the end of 2016, progress continued towards each of the Endgame Plan’s four objectives.
The world has never been closer to eradicating polio, with fewer cases in fewer areas of fewer countries than at any time in the past. The virus is now more geographically constrained than at any point in history.
The Ebola outbreak in West Africa is the largest in history and has affected six countries in West Africa, with Sierra Leone being among the hardest hit. The disease killed about 11,296 people out of 15,213 laboratory confirmed cases (CDC, as of August 4, 2015). The recorded death toll includes 4,808 in Liberia, 3,951 in Sierra Leone and 2,522 in Guinea. Control measures introduced in Sierra Leone proved effective in bringing the outbreak largely under control.
2015 Annual Narrative Report of IASC Gender Standby Capacity Project
Project Overview and Management
Overview of the GenCap Project
The GenCap Project is as an inter-agency resource, which was established in 2007 under the Inter Agency Standing Committee (IASC) Sub-Working Group on Gender and Humanitarian Action (now the Gender Reference Group and Humanitarian Action). The Project aims to support humanitarian actors mainstream gender through three pillars:
Deployment of senior gender experts;
Improved household food security continues across the country due the main season harvests
• The dry season is beginning in December with the cessation of rains and the harvesting of the main season’s food crops. Harvests of vegetables and staple cereals is increasing food availability for poor households, while farm labor is providing wages that are improving their access to food. Most areas in the country will remain in Minimal (IPC Phase 1) acute food insecurity through January 2017.
In November 2015, more than 1,000 Cuban nationals were reported to be camped out at the Paso Canoas border crossing with Panama. In view of requirements for entering the country and the fact that these migrants did not meet them, a significant amount of people began to congregate in this border community, taking to living in the streets while they waited for a solution to their immigration status. The Costa Rican government issued permits allowing migrants to enter the country and continue on their way to the United States.
The Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) launched in 2000 sought to halve by 2015 the proportion of the world’s population without sustainable access to improved water sources and sanitation facilities. By 2015, about 2.6 billion additional people had gained access to improved water sources since 1990, the baseline year for the MDGs, thus meeting the MDG target. However, 663 million people still do not have access to improved water sources.
GENERAL ASSEMBLY PLENARY
SEVENTY-FIRST SESSION, 63RD MEETING (AM)
Adopting a draft resolution on global health and foreign policy that focused on the role of health employment in driving economic growth and helping Member States move toward sustainable development, the General Assembly also held a debate on the culture of peace and elected members to the Organizational Committee of the Peacebuilding Commission.
This brief summarizes FEWS NET’s most forward-looking analysis of projected emergency food assistance needs in FEWS NET coverage countries. The projected size of each country’s acutely food insecure population (IPC Phase 3 and higher) is compared to last year and the recent five-year average and categorized as Higher ( p), Similar ( u), or Lower ( q). Countries where external emergency food assistance needs are anticipated are identified. Projected lean season months highlighted in red indicate either an early start or an extension to the typical lean season.
The remote health post in Koribondo has no electricity, the sole midwife rushes from one pregnant woman to another, and nurses use buckets to fetch water from a nearby well. On a rainy afternoon, dozens of mothers waited under a leaky roof to get themselves and their babies tested for malaria. Many had walked for hours on dirt paths to reach the clinic. The motorcycle ambulance, meanwhile, sat idle. There was no fuel for it.
WFP conducted a training on post-harvest management for 104 participants, including smallholder farmers, Ministry of Agriculture extension supervisors, UN agencies, NGOs and the private sector.
WFP provided food assistance to 211 flood-affected households in the Western Area in collaboration with the Office of National Security and the Red Cross.
A 60 percent increase in fuel prices has resulted in a price hike in transportation, goods and services throughout the country.
“Not to take our eyes off the ball”
It is well known that the overall security situation in the Lake Chad Basin area remains precarious and volatile. The efforts exerted by the international community to confront and curb the horrendous violence perpetrated by Boko Haram are commendable, yet the group is still able to continue its campaign of terror. While it is avoiding direct combat, it relies on ambushes, use of Improvised Explosive Devices and suicide bombers targeting vulnerable groups.

INTRODUCTION: There are few documented examples of community networks that have used unstructured information to support surveillance during a health emergency. In January 2015, the Ebola Response Consortium rapidly implemented community event-based surveillance for Ebola virus disease at a national scale in Sierra Leone.
