Health, Peace and Humanitarian Cease-fires
by Jon M. Ebersole
Militarised violence presents what is perhaps the most vexing challenge to the achievement of the goal of health for all. While not a member of the UN’s Executive Committee on Peace and Security, WHO is nonetheless positioned to play a crucial peacemaking role in some of the world’s most difficult trouble spots.
From Health in Emergencies Issue 8
The establishment of high quality, functioning acute flaccid paralysis (AFP) surveillance - a critical step to polio elimination - is possible in countries affected by emergencies, as shown in the examples of Afghanistan, Angola and Somalia.

29 December - A 16-member regional organization in West Africa has decided to send troops to the borders separating Guinea, Sierra Leone and Liberia to help calm the violence that has erupted there over the past few weeks, according to a statement released today by the United Nations Mission in Sierra Leone (UNAMSIL).
1961: 27 April - Sierra Leone, which was founded as a haven for liberated slaves in the 18th century, receives independence from Britain with Milton Margai as prime minister.
Many of the refugees who sought a safe
haven in Guinea from war in Sierra Leone have again been forced to move
because of violence.
The displaced Sierra Leoneons are once
more seeking refuge after fighting spread to the border area which has
become their temporary home during the nine-year conflict in their own
country.
Some refugees have returned to Sierra Leone while others have fled to the safety of jungle areas. Many have also escaped to the Guinean capital Conakry and taken shelter in the Sierra Leonean High Commission awaiting transportation back to their home country.
As of 27 December, 512 suspected cases,
including 190 deaths have been reported in 15 districts in northwestern
Guinea. Laboratory tests carried out by Institut Pasteur, Dakar, Senegal,
have confirmed yellow fever activity in 10 districts.
In collaboration with WHO, UNICEF and
Médecins sans Frontières, the Ministry of Health, Guinea is conducting
a vaccination campaign.
