1. Summary

In November 2015, more than 1,000 Cuban nationals were reported to be camped out at the Paso Canoas border crossing with Panama. In view of requirements for entering the country and the fact that these migrants did not meet them, a significant amount of people began to congregate in this border community, taking to living in the streets while they waited for a solution to their immigration status. The Costa Rican government issued permits allowing migrants to enter the country and continue on their way to the United States.

The last batch of Ebola responders from the Cuban Medical Brigade will depart Sierra Leone on 1 April 2015, following a farewell ceremony with local dignitaries on Monday, 30 March in Freetown. The first contingent of 98 Cuban health workers departed Sierra Leone on Sunday 22 March after nearly 6 months supporting the Ebola outbreak response in the country.

Vienna, Austria, February 6, 2015. The OPEC Fund for International Development (OFID) has signed a US$400,000 grant agreement with Cuba to support Cuban medical brigades deployed for Ebola treatment/containment missions in Sierra Leone, Liberia and Guinea.

The agreement was signed by OFID Director-General, Mr Suleiman J Al-Herbish and HE Ileana Núñez Mordoche, Deputy Minister of Foreign Trade and Investment of Cuba.

  • In response to measles cases in Lofa county, Liberia, the UNICEF-supported periodic intensification of routine immunization, or PIRI, is ongoing across all of the 15 counties.

The UK has so far pledged £230 million to help the people of Sierra Leone defeat Ebola. This will build 6 treatment centres across the country, provide food and supplies for thousands of quarantined homes and already has provided over 750 operational beds to isolate and treat cases of Ebola.

As well as giving its own money, Britain has asked other countries across the world to join them in supporting Sierra Leone. So far Norway, Denmark, Cuba, Australia, New Zealand, South Korea and Canada have all agreed to provide health staff for Sierra Leone.

Freetown, Oct. 3, 014 (MOHS) – One hundred and sixty-five (165) Man-Medics Team from the Republic of Cuba to aid Sierra Leone in the fight to contain the deadly Ebola virus disease outbreak in the country arrived on Thursday October 2, 2014 at the Lungi International Airport.

The 165 man-team comprised 63 Medical specialist and 102 other cadres with different disciplines including nurses.

Defeating Ebola conference: Summary of conference pledges

Britain has rallied decisive international support for Sierra Leone in its hour of need, International Development Secretary Justine Greening said following the Defeating Ebola conference today in London.

The conference, co-hosted by the Foreign Secretary and the International Development Secretary, brought together more than 20 governments, a dozen charities and NGOs, the UN, World Bank, health experts and the private sector to pledge funds, equipment and health workers.
