6 November 2017 (WMO) - It is very likely that 2017 will be one of the three hottest years on record, with many high-impact events including catastrophic hurricanes and floods, debilitating heatwaves and drought. Long-term indicators of climate change such as increasing carbon dioxide concentrations, sea level rise and ocean acidification continue unabated. Arctic sea ice coverage remains below average and previously stable Antarctic sea ice extent was at or near a record low.

In this context, the European Union showed leadership and remained strongly committed to promote and protect human rights and democracy across the world.

Voluntary repatriation: seven (07) Ivorian families of twenty-five (25) individuals were entered on the departure list. Arrangements are underway to facilitate the departure of these families in safety and dignity during the first fortnight of August.

Deadly mudslides in Sierra Leone’s capital last week has destroyed whole neighbourhoods and left thousands of already vulnerable residents homeless and exposed to disease.

Nearly 500 people were killed and at least 600 more remain missing more than one week after the catastrophe. Close to 6,000 people were directly affected by the mudslides, having either lost a family member, seen their homes destroyed or been injured in the disaster. Initial reports show that children and women are the most affected.

OTTAWA — In support of the Government of Canada’s response to fight the Ebola epidemic in West Africa, and following an acclimatization period, 37 Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) health care and support staff commenced operations today in Kerry Town, Sierra Leone.

CAF military doctors nurses, medics and support staff are operating at the UK’s Kerry Town Treatment Unit (KTTU). Canadians are working alongside their British counterparts in providing essential medical care to local and international health care workers.

The UK has so far pledged £230 million to help the people of Sierra Leone defeat Ebola. This will build 6 treatment centres across the country, provide food and supplies for thousands of quarantined homes and already has provided over 750 operational beds to isolate and treat cases of Ebola.

As well as giving its own money, Britain has asked other countries across the world to join them in supporting Sierra Leone. So far Norway, Denmark, Cuba, Australia, New Zealand, South Korea and Canada have all agreed to provide health staff for Sierra Leone.

Defeating Ebola conference: Summary of conference pledges

Britain has rallied decisive international support for Sierra Leone in its hour of need, International Development Secretary Justine Greening said following the Defeating Ebola conference today in London.

The conference, co-hosted by the Foreign Secretary and the International Development Secretary, brought together more than 20 governments, a dozen charities and NGOs, the UN, World Bank, health experts and the private sector to pledge funds, equipment and health workers.

Health Minister Rona Ambrose today announced that Canada will make available for donation over $2.5 million in personal protective equipment (PPE) to the World Health Organization (WHO) to aid in the global response to the Ebola outbreak in West Africa.

Recently, the WHO reported a shortage of equipment in the affected countries and has appealed to member states for donations for use by front-line workers in the affected countries.
