The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) today opened a major logistics hub in Ghana as it expands its network of depots to ensure that it can respond rapidly to simultaneous humanitarian emergencies around the world.

The new hub, located within the grounds of the international airport in the Ghanaian capital, Accra, will stock supplies such as high-energy biscuits, drinking water, drugs, medical equipment, sanitation and hygiene systems, and radio and telecommunications equipment.

If all rich countries gave a single cent per $100 of their respective gross national products, full funding would be achieved for the Humanitarian Appeal 2007, United Nations Emergency Relief Coordinator Jan Egeland said today as he called on States to find the $3.9 billion needed for that effort.

He said that amount represented a decrease from last year's Humanitarian Appeal for $4.7 billion, of which $3.1 billion, or 63 per cent, had been received and had helped 31 million people this year.

La situation pluviométrique s'est beaucoup améliorée au mois de juillet. Les déficits se comblent graduellement sur la plupart de la région et les soucis de mauvaise campagne se dissipent. Il y a cependant des poches où la performance des cultures est mauvaise et d'autres où les conditions ne sont pas encore réunies pour l'installation des semis (nord Sénégal et Est du Niger) qui doivent faire l'objet d'un suivi rapproché.
