Population Movements

Since the onset of hostilities on 26 August, at least 3,845 families (19,225 individuals) have been displaced. The majority of displaced civilians continue to find refuge with friends and relatives living in safer areas, while others are temporarily sheltered in schools or public buildings. UNHCR and its partner LibAid continue to monitor the situation and provide assistance to affected families in Tripoli and other locations including in Zawiya, Surman, Regdallen, Sabratha, Tarhouna, Bani Walid and Yefren.

The number of cases of chikungunya fever has dramatically increased in Kassala, where two seniors died on Monday. The current outbreak, in which more than 6,000 people have been infected, is causing paralysis in all service facilities and the markets.

A resident told Radio Dabanga that the number of those who suffer the disease from his family and relatives alone exceeds 20 cases, while the health centres in the districts of Kassala have witnessed overcrowding. Patients line up in front of nurses to take injections and intravenous solutions.

Introduction

Ethiopia has a long standing history of hosting refugees. In 2004, a National Refugee Law was enacted based on the international and regional refugee conventions to which Ethiopia is a party. Currently, the country is host to some 905,800 refugees, the majority from South Sudan (46.6%), Somalia (28.4%), Eritrea (19.2%) and Sudan (4.9%). As conflicts are ongoing in neighbouring countries, refugees continue to enter Ethiopia on a daily basis, making it the second largest refugee-hosting country in Africa.

The Plan is led by 12 Appeal Partners, and is supported by an additional 10 operational response partners. The Response Plan adopts a multi-sectoral, area-based approach and seeks to support refugees’ capacity for self-reliance. Implementation will be guided by a participatory approach.

People in the camps for the displaced in North Darfur complain of the spread of malaria.

“There is no home free of malaria in Zamzam camp,” a community leader reported to Radio Dabanga. “The same is true for the camps of Abu Shouk, Tawila, Kassab, Fata Borno, and Kabkabiya.”

The sheikh said that the disease, spread by mosquitoes “appears to be more widespread than during the last rainy seasons”.

He added that most displaced people cannot afford to buy medicines anymore. “With these soaring food prices, we have hardly money enough to buy food.”

Kassala State Governor Adam Jamaa has acknowledged the death of seven people caused by chikungunya fever. More than 6,000 people have been infected in the recently confirmed outbreak of the virus.

Jamaa made his statements to the press. On Monday the emergency department at the federal Ministry of Health already reported that there are 6,250 cases of chikungunya in Sudan’s northeastern state.

Ethiopia is host to the second largest refugee population in Africa, sheltering 905,831 registered refugees and asylum seekers as of 31 August 2018.

So far in 2018, 36,185 refugees arrived in Ethiopia, including 1,626 in August. They are mostly from South Sudan and Eritrea.
