• WFP’s school feeding programme provided fortified date bars to 58,369 marginalised children in 2,306 rural community schools in eight governorates. Takehome entitlements were provided to 186,050 family members of children with school attendance of 80 percent or more.

Approximately 231,000 of all the refugees in Ethiopia, have gone through the comprehensive (L3) registration, helping to develop a system to better manage and assist refugees.

Introduction

Continued conflict, displacement and environmental shocks negatively impacted access to food and restricted the ability for communities to meet basic needs in Greater Bahr el Ghazal (GBeG) between July and September 2018. Waves of displacement in Western Bahr el Ghazal (WBeG) and flooding in Northern Bahr el Ghazal (NBeG), WBeG and Greater Tonj area1 (GTA) threatened overall food security in the region.

REACH has been assessing hard-to-reach areas in WBeG since April 2017, NBeG since March 2018 and GTA since January 2018.

At the end of December 2018, 21 Humanitarian Response Plans (HRP) and the Syria Regional Response Plan (3RP) required US$24.93 billion to assist 97.9 million people in urgent need of humanitarian support. The requirements remained unchanged as of the end of November 2018. The plans are funded at $14.58 billion which amounts to 58.5 per cent of financial requirements for 2018. Notably, the percentage of total funding contributed through humanitarian response plans carried out by the UN with partners in 2018 is estimated at 62.9%.

IDP Response

UNHCR supported more than 90,900 internally displaced persons (IDPs) and returnees. Throughout the year, UNHCR and its partner LibAid distributed non-food items, such as blankets, kitchen sets and hygiene kits, to more than 68,240 IDPs and returnees in over 14 cities, including Tripoli, Benghazi, Sirt, Misrata, Sabha and Ubari. In addition, UNHCR and its partners ACTED and DRC provided multipurpose cash assistance to over 22,650 individuals, who used the funds to cover basic needs, including food, hygiene items, and other necessities.

Scholarships, training and new schools are ways in which education is being delivered to thousands of people at several refugee camps.

Nearly 700 refugees from Sudan who are living in Chad have been trained as teachers.

Many of the 300,000 Darfuri refugees in Chad who fled genocide in Sudan over a decade ago face limited chances to continue education and find work.

But they are being given access to education through a unique teacher-training programme.

One of them is Khadidja Ahmat Djouma, a second-year student originally from Ouroum in Sudan.

Highlights

  • The Chikungunya outbreak in Kassala state was successfully contained (with 19,897 cases in total) after sustained and combined efforts from the WHO, UNICEF and the Sudan Ministry of Health. Unfortunately, a resurgence in neighboring Red Sea State has been recorded with response plans actioned utilizing lessons learned from the Kassala experience. To date, case increases are limited to Port Sudan and no fatalities have been recorded.
