Highlights

  • The Chikungunya outbreak in Kassala state was successfully contained (with 19,897 cases in total) after sustained and combined efforts from the WHO, UNICEF and the Sudan Ministry of Health. Unfortunately, a resurgence in neighboring Red Sea State has been recorded with response plans actioned utilizing lessons learned from the Kassala experience. To date, case increases are limited to Port Sudan and no fatalities have been recorded.

Jordan is one of the countries most affected by the Syria crisis, with the second highest share of refugees compared to Syrian refugee population in the world.

83% of Syrian refugees in Jordan live in urban areas and 85% live below the poverty line (USD 96 per individual monthly). 48% of refugees are children, and 4% are elderly.

The Government of Jordan has taken steps to open formal employment opportunities for Syrians. Approximately 45,000 work permits were issued in 2018.

In Tunisia, UNHCR aims to support the establishment of a national asylum system, and to build national capacity for refugee protection.

There are currently 654,113 persons of concern to UNHCR in Chad including 447,125 refugees and 3,653 asylum seekers. In the Lac region, there are 124,078 IDPs, 38,677 Chadian returnees, as well as 10,607 refugees. In eastern Chad, there 336,929 Sudanese refugees and asylum seekers and 3,858 Chadians (former refugees) voluntarily repatriated from Sudan since December 2017. In southern Chad, there are 96,438 CAR refugees as well as 45,710 Chadian returnees from CAR. In N’djamena, there are 6,804 urban refugees of different nationalities, but mainly from CAR.

Message from our Regional Director

Despite numerous humanitarian challenges in 2017 in Africa, there were also a number of heart-warming accomplishments. A case in point, was when a local response of Red Crescent teams—and other partners—curbed Somalia's cholera outbreak through the power of local volunteers and shared international expertise. In terms of support to our members, 36 National Societies were able to kick start initiatives that built their capacity through seed grants.
