A five-day workshop to strengthen the capacity of non-governmental organisations (NGOs) to effectively respond to humanitarian crises and coordinate within the international humanitarian system is held in Kampala, Uganda at the initiative of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), in cooperation with the United States Agency for International Development, Office of U.S. Foreign Disaster Assistance (USAID/OFDA) and implemented by International Medical Corps.

The Secretary General of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Professor Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu has called on Member States and humanitarian organizations to provide urgent humanitarian assistance to the Republic of Sudan following the heavy floods that ravaged Sudan, in general, and Sanar State, in particular.
It should be mentioned that floods destroyed thousands of homes and caused widespread havoc to the environment and infrastructure, leaving thousands of the population without shelter and therefore requiring urgent assistance.
In his statement at the twenty-third Arab Summit in Baghdad on Thursday, 29th of March 2012, Professor Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu, Secretary General of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) reiterated that the Palestinian Cause remains focal for the Muslim Ummah and that the OIC has devoted most of its activities to mobilize international support for the Palestinian people. He noted that the Islamic Group at both the United Nations in New York and the UNESCO in Paris has provided full support to the Palestinian bid for a full-fledged membership at both the UNESCO and the UN.
The Secretary General of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, Professor Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu, stressed on creating an appropriate link between economic growth and social development which constitutes one of the major components of the OIC economic cooperation strategy to address the spate of poverty and hunger in a number of OIC countries.
An agreement was signed on 21 September 2011 in the Somali capital Mogadishu between the Somali National Commission for Disasters Management and the Office of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) in Mogadishu. The agreement included allocation of 4,500 tons of corn from Sudan’s aid to Somalia, which will be distributed through the OIC Office outside the capital city Mogadishu.
Noteworthy that the OIC Office in Mogadishu had earlier distributed 2800 tons of aid provided to Somalia in the most affected provinces by drought and famine.

In response to the appeal of the Secretary General of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), Professor Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu, to support the victims of the drought disaster in Somalia, the Government of the Sudan donated the amount of US$100,000.00 through OIC’s Emergency Program for the Relief of Affected Somalis, which is being implemented by many partners operating in Mogadishu.
