The recent conviction of former Liberian president Charles Taylor on charges of war crimes and crimes against humanity is a great accomplishment for international justice. Not since the Nuremberg trials has a former head of state been successfully prosecuted by an international court. Amongst the many West Africans watching the trial closely were thousands of former refugees and internally displaced persons (IDPs) who fled the gruesome violence inflicted by Taylor’s forces. Over the course of the conflict in Sierra Leone, approximately half of the country’s population was forced to flee.
