The people of Southern Sudan are voting this week on the question of whether they wish to secede or remain part of Sudan. At the same time, negotiations are in progress on how the Northern and Southern parts of the country are to co-exist following the referendum: either as one nation or as neighbouring countries.

As a result of the mediation efforts of Switzerland and other actors, in 2002 the North and the South of Sudan signed a ceasefire agreement at the B=FCrgenstock resort near Lucerne.

The FDFA deplores the fact that the Sudanese authorities have decided to expel humanitarian actors from Darfur in response to the decision of Pre-Trial Chamber I of the International Criminal Court, published on 4 March 2009, to issue an arrest warrant for the Sudanese president.

The FDFA has noted the decision by Pre-Trial Chamber I of the International Criminal Court (ICC) to issue an arrest warrant for Sudanese president Omar Al Bashir for crimes against humanity and war crimes. Switzerland attaches great importance to the work of the Court and respects its independence.

Switzerland will provide the UN with 19 million Swiss francs for humanitarian aid. Toni Frisch, the Federal Council's Delegate for Humanitarian Aid, outlined the main thrust of Switzerland's commitment within the UN framework at a donor conference in Geneva.

As a donor, Switzerland has clear ideas about the direction international humanitarian aid should take.

La délégation est conduite par Toni Frisch, Délégué à l'aide humanitaire et Chef du CSA et par Josef Bucher, Ambassadeur en mission spéciale de gestion des conflits. L'objectif de cette mission est de constater sur place l'évolution de la situation et de poursuivre le dialogue avec le gouvernement soudanais.

Through the joint mediation of Switzerland and the United States of America a cease-fire agreement was signed today at Burgenstock Switzerland between the Government of the Republic of Sudan and the Sudanese Peoples Liberation Movement/Nuba Mountains(SPLM/Nuba). The agreement will enter into force 72 hours after signature and will be applied under the supervision of a Joint Military Commission.

The cease-fire negotiations for the Nuba Mountains have been officially opened in B=FCrgenstock (NW), Switzerland on January 14, 2002. They are co-chaired by Swiss and US Officials.

An 11-member delegation of the Government of Sudan arrived in Switzerland on January 14, preceded by a 7-member SPLM/Nuba delegation on January 13, 2002. The Sudanese Government delegation is lead by Dr. Mutrif Siddig Ali Nimmery and the SPLM/Nuba delegation by Commandant Abdulaziz Adam Elhilu.
