Italy continues to be in the forefront in carrying out mine clearance activities in Sudan alongside the UNMAS (United Nations Mine Action Service). The complete decontamination of Sudan’s Red Sea State from anti-personnel mines and other types of unexploded devices was announced in a flamboyant celebration in Port Sudan. The celebration was attended by a high-level delegation of the Sudanese Government led by the Assistant to the President Musa Mohammed Ahmed, the Governor of the Red Sea State and the Federal Deputy Minister of Defence.

In light of the health emergency situation in Sudan caused by the proliferation of outbreaks of bacillary diarrhoea, the Italian Cooperation contributed 400,000 euro emergency aid to the International Federation of the Red Cross (IFRC). This is in response to the plea the IFRC and the Red Crescent made at the beginning of September to help approx. 64,500 people, with a special focus on water and sanitation.

Support Enables Clearance and Risk Education Work to Get Underway Immediately

Khartoum, 21 January 2016: The Government of Italy gave EUR 250,000 to the United Nations Mine Action Service (UNMAS) for humanitarian mine action work in Sudan. The support will enable UNMAS to commence an important project aimed at reducing casualties among the Sudanese population and humanitarian field workers in the Kassala province. UNMAS will survey, clear and destroy landmines and other contamination, and undertake a risk education campaign targeting affected populations.

Ambassador Tomas Ulicny, Head of Delegation of the European launched a photo exhibition hosted by the Italian Ambassador and Italian Cooperation. The photo exhibition was organized on the occasion of launching the second phase of EU funded health projects in Sudan. The project is funded by the European Union and is implemented by the Italian Cooperation in the states of Red Sea, Kassala and Gedarif. At the exhibition, Dr. Amna Dirar, State Minister of Human Resources and Fabrizio Lobasso Ambassador of Italy addressed the guests.

Following the Conference on Darfur, held on June 25th 2007 in Paris, the Italian Minister for Foreign Affairs Massimo D'Alema has decided to provide humanitarian aid to the Darfur's refugees in Chad in the frame of the relief initiative co-ordinated by the French Government.

The decision of the Government of Italy represents a first act of support for the French initiative and consists of a donation of 300.000 euros to the High Commissioner for Refugees and in three humanitarian flights with emergency aid for the 250.000 persons living in the camps of eastern Chad.

The Department of Development Cooperation of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs dispatched a flight last night carrying humanitarian aid valued at 96,000 euros to the refugees of Bor in Sudan. The cargo included approximately 25 tonnes of essential supplies indispensable in this initial rescue phase.
The flight left from the Brindisi depot and was delivered to the personnel of the Italian NGO INTERSOS in Juba, who will handle distribution of the supplies.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has sent a special flight containing medical materials and basic goods to Darfur. The humanitarian flight, which was organised by the Directorate for Development Cooperation, is transporting approximately 20 tonnes worth of goods supplied by Italian authorities and NGOs.
The airplane left from Brindisi and is bound for Nyala, where it should arrive by this evening. The goods will be delivered to Barbara Contini, the government's special envoy to Darfur for development cooperation activities.

I have heard the name of Emma Bonino mentioned - I wish! But she must leave immediately". This is the appeal by Undersecretary for Foreign Affairs Margherita Boniver, who has already been to the battered region of Darfur in the Sudan twice, in June and in December of last year.
