El Fasher, 20 September 2018 - The African Union - United Nations Hybrid Mission in Darfur (UNAMID) and the Humanitarian Country Team (HCT), have deployed a joint mission to provide emergency assistance to people affected by mudslides in East Jebel Marra, South Darfur.
Heavy rains in the area last week caused mudslides in Wadi Tuliba and Tagulei villages, resulting in the reported deaths of at least 19 people and the injury of 25 others, while an unspecified number remain unaccounted for and some families have lost their homes, according to official local sources.
UNAMID Joint Special Representative (JSR), Jeremiah Mamabolo, has concluded a two-day visit to South Darfur, during which he met leaders at the state and local levels and discussed access challenges affecting the Mission’s operations in parts of East Jebel Marra.
During the visit, Mr. Mamabolo and his delegation met the Deputy Wali of South Darfur, Mr. Taha Abdallah Hamid, the Commissioner of Mershing Locality, Dr. Al Sadig Mohamed Khamis and the State Security Committee.
E l Geneina: UNAMID Deputy Joint Special Representative (DJSR), Ms. Anita Gbeho recently, concluded a two-day visit to Sector West. This is her first working visit to West Darfur since she assumed duty as DJSR in May 2018.
Upon her arrival in El Geneina, Ms. Gbeho paid a courtesy call on the State Wali (Governor), Mr. Hussein Hammad at his office, with whom she exchanged various points of view as part of her efforts to enhance cooperation with local authorities and discuss the implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 2429 (2018).
On 2 August, UNAMID’s Governance and Community Stabilization Section (GCSS), in partnership with the Sudan Disarmament Demobilization and Reintegration Commission (SDDRC), concluded a demobilization exercise for 1229 ex-combatants from armed movements who are signatories to Darfur peace agreements including, the Doha Document for Peace in Darfur (DDPD) and the Darfur Peace Agreement (DPA). The exercise included some combatants from the Sudan Armed Forces (SAF) and Popular Defense Forces (PDF).
From 1 to 2 August, some 43 participants, including 11 men from Government offices, Ajaweed council and civil society organizations as well as members of UN Security Council Resolution 1325 State Committee and Gender Mediation Network, attended a workshop supported by UNAMID’s Gender Advisory Unit (GAU) in El Fasher, North Darfur.
United Nations Under-Secretary-General in the Department of Field Support, Mr. Atul Khare, has concluded a three-day visit to Darfur, during which he met stakeholders and saw key projects in the Jebel Marra area where UNAMID is establishing a temporary operating base (TOB) in Golo, Central Darfur.
The mission was part of a week-long visit to Sudan from 22 to 27 July, during which he met Government officials in both Khartoum and Darfur, to discuss the overall situation in Darfur and the implementation of UNAMID’s new mandate, including the Mission’s draw down.
On 11 July 2018, the Government of the State of Qatar hosted the 13th meeting of the Implementation Follow up Commission (IFC) of the Doha Document for Peace in Darfur (DDPD) at the Sheraton Grand Hotel, Doha, Qatar. The meeting was chaired by Dr. Mutlaq Majed Alqahtani, Special Envoy to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Counterterrorism, Mediation and Conflict resolution of the State of Qatar. It was attended by members of the IFC including the Government of Sudan represented by Dr. Amin Hassan Omar and Dr.
El Fasher, 21 June 2018 - The African Union - United Nations Hybrid Mission in Darfur (UNAMID) is deeply concerned with the current fighting between the Government of Sudan forces and Sudan Liberation Army elements of Abdul Wahid (SLA/AW) in eastern Jebel Marra, South Darfur.
Intensified fighting this month, characterized by the burning of villages in eastern Jebel Marra has had grave humanitarian consequences, with hundreds of civilians being newly displaced.
On 29 May 2018, UNAMID commemorated the International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers under the theme “UN Peacekeeping: 70 Years of Service and Sacrifice.”
El Fasher, 24 May 2018 – The African Union – United Nations Hybrid Operation in Darfur (UNAMID) expresses deep concern about recent attacks on three different internally displaced persons (IDP) camps in Central Darfur state, which took place between 21 and 23 May 2018, resulting in a number of civilian fatalities and injuries among IDPs.
Recent incidents were reported at Khamsa Dagaig, Ardayba and Jedda IDP camps.
UNAMID Gender Advisory Unit (GAU), in collaboration with the South Darfur State Ministry for Social Affairs (MoSA) recently concluded a two-day workshop to establish Women’s Protection Networks for internally displaced persons (IDP) in the state.
About 60 women, comprising 51 from IDP camps and nine from Nyala town, participated in the event aimed at establishing a platform for women to familiarize with the procedures to seek physical, legal, health and psychosocial support in the event of violations at the IDP camps.
El Fasher, 20 May 2018 - The African Union-United Nations Hybrid Operation in Darfur (UNAMID) Joint Special Representative (JSR) Jeremiah Mamabolo has concluded a two day visit to oversee progress on the establishment of the Mission’s temporary operating base in Golo, Jebel Marra.
On 23 April 2018, UNAMID handed over a police post at Al Riyadh camp for Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in El Geneina, West Darfur, to Government of Sudan police forces. The project is part of the Mission’s efforts to strengthen rule of law and enhance security in the area. The police post is expected to help to boost the Sudanese police capacity to prevent and respond to incidents within the location.
UNAMID Rule of Law recently organized training workshops for rural court judges in four Darfur states-- El Fasher, North Darfur; El Daein, East Darfur; Zalingei, Central Darfur; and El Geneina, West Darfur. Some 120 judges received training on Sudanese laws, legal procedures and techniques for conducting successful mediation of disputes. They were also given a copy of the Legal Hand book in Arabic published by UNAMID Rule of Law, in collaboration with Sudan judiciary.
On 10 April 2018, the United Nations (UN) Under-Secretary-General (USG) for Peacekeeping Operations, Jean-Pierre Lacroix, and the African Union (AU) Commissioner for Peace and Security, Ambassador Smail Chergui, concluded a joint visit to Sudan, which aimed at strengthening the important partnership between the UN and the AU, as emphasized by both UN Secretary-General António Guterres and the Chairperson of the AU Commission, Moussa Faki Mahamat.
On 3 April 2018, senior Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) officers attended a UNAMID-supported training on protection of children in armed conflict and promoting local ownership of child protection.
The one-day workshop, held in Nyala, South Darfur, was organized by the Mission’s Child Protection Unit (CPU) and is part of ongoing efforts to sensitize parties to the conflict on issues pertinent to child rights and child protection. The objective is to minimize grave violations against children including preventing and ending the recruitment of children into armed activity.
On 04 April 2018, Raising Awareness among communities in Darfur on the risk of the Explosive remnants of War (ERW) was the focus of the commemoration of the International Day for Mine Awareness and Assistance in Mine Action held in El Fasher, North Darfur under the theme “ Needs Driven, People Centered”.
On 26 and 27 March 2018, some 100 women from Darfur’s five states, representing the state government, parliamentarians, localities, civil society organizations and internally displaced persons (IDPs) gathered in El Fasher, North Darfur, to attend the Global Open Day on the United Nations Security Council Resolution (UNSCR) 1325 (2000) on Women, Peace and Security.
On 17 March 2018, more than 2500 families were affected by a fire that ravaged parts of El Neem C for internally displaced persons, in East Darfur.
A UNAMD Team, led by Mr. Innih Akpan, Officer in Charge, East Darfur office, visited the Camp to identify the damage and losses caused by the fire.
Some 800 former combatants will soon be reintegrated into civilian life following the conclusion of a two-week demobilization exercise in Nyala, South Darfur, which began on 26 February 2018.
The exercise was jointly organized by the Sudan Disarmament, Demobilization and Reintegration Commission (SDDRC); UNAMID’s Governance & Community Stabilization Section (GCSS), World Food Programme (WFP) and United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).
