Recent analyses released by the European Asylum Support Office (EASO) reveal that the number of applications for international protection lodged in the EU+ in June 2018 registered a slight decrease compared to the previous month **_i_**.  Approximately 51 300 applications were lodged in June; about 1 600 fewer than in May, while in the first half of 2018, some 301 390 applications were lodged in the EU+, a 15% decrease compared to the first half of 2017 **_ii_**.

"The Ambassadors of the resident EU Embassies in Sudan are following closely the protests across the country and the detention of a number of political leaders.

We consider it crucial that people are permitted to exercise their right to freedom of expression, including freedom of the media and of political participation. At the same time, we urge those exercising their fundamental rights to express their opinions peacefully.

"The presidential pardoning of six Sudanese human rights activists, including Dr Ibrahim Mudawi and Hafiz Idris, detained since December 2016, is a step in the right direction. The European Union expects this to be followed by further steps allowing for an opening of the political space and reinforced respect for fundamental freedoms and human rights in Sudan.

At this important juncture, the EU encourages Sudan to progress further towards national reconciliation and international cooperation. The EU is ready to accompany Sudan in this process."

In July, there were 15 400 detections of illegal border crossings on the four main migratory routes into the EU as the number of migrants arriving in Italy fell by more than half from the previous month. Spain continued to see the heaviest migratory pressure since 2009.

The total number of detections in the first seven months of 2017 fell by two-thirds from the same period of last year to 127 100.

The nine resident EU Ambassadors in Sudan welcomed the announcement by the Government of Sudan to open one additional overland humanitarian corridor to famine-stricken South Sudan. The first UN convoy from the city of El Obeid in Sudan to Bentiu in South Sudan on March 30 is delivering lifesaving aid in a timely and cost-effective way. This adds significantly to the humanitarian corridor between Kosti and Renk, which the Governments of Sudan and South Sudan opened in 2014.

Mr. Jean–Michel Dumond, the Ambassador of the European Union to the Republic of the Sudan, visited cooperation projects funded by the European Union, which support agriculture, livelihoods, fisheries, education and health in Red Sea State.

The visit also included health projects carried-out by the Italian Cooperation, in particular: “Promoting Qualitative Health Services” and “Improve the Health Status of Vulnerable Population" implemented across three (3) states in East Sudan.

In signing the Roadmap Agreement, these groups have demonstrated a laudable commitment to ending the conflicts in Sudan and moving towards a process of dialogue as a basis for lasting peace in their country.
