(14 February 2017) Dr. Mudawi Ibrahim Adam, a prominent Sudanese human rights defender, has been unlawfully detained for over two months, held by the National Intelligence and Security Services (NISS) at Khartoum’s Kober Prison without charge or access to legal representation, 39 human rights groups and activists said.

(31 March 2016) The efforts of the Government of Sudan to obstruct the engagement of civil society activists in a United Nations (UN)-led human rights review of the country is unacceptable and shows blatant contempt not just for human rights defenders in Sudan, but to human rights standards and the UN Human Rights Council, 36 Sudanese and international groups and seven prominent Sudanese individuals said today.

ACJPS and FIDH call upon Sudanese authorities to immediately grant access to six people who have been detained incommunicado and without charge since their arrests by Sudanese security services on 2 and 3 October 2014 in Abu Jehiba town, South Kordofan state. There are concerns for the safety of those individuals who were transferred to Khartoum on an unknown date and have been denied access to their families or lawyers.

These were sparked by the lifting of fuel subsidies the day before, and were met by Sudanese authorities with excessive force, including live ammunition, leading to the deaths of at least 185 people.

Paris, Nairobi, 18 October 2013 – The African Union (AU) held an extraordinary summit meeting in Addis Ababa on 11 and 12 October, in response to proceedings initiated by the International Criminal Court (ICC) involving Sudanese and Kenyan Heads of State and one deputy-president. Despite the support for international justice expressed by Heads of State during the meeting or by their absence, the AU adopted a decision which undermines one of the pillars of its mandate : the fight against impunity for the most serious crimes.

The conflict that began in Libya on 17 February 2011 with a popular revolt against Gaddafi’s regime has triggered a mass exodus of the civilian population into neighbouring countries. Hundreds of thousands of people have fled, mainly into Tunisia and Egypt, as a result of attacks by Gaddafi’s forces on civilian populations, the rebellion and NATO bombings. Migrant workers and refugees from Sub-Saharan Africa have been particular targets of violence.
