Vienna, Austria, March 11, 2015. Over 30 partner countries stand to benefit from the latest round of financing approved at the 150th Session of the Governing Board of the OPEC Fund for International Development (OFID).
Public sector approvals amounting to US$201m will support the following projects:
May 6, 2014, Vienna, Austria. The OPEC Fund for International Development (OFID) has approved a US$500,000 grant in humanitarian aid to help provide food assistance to conflict-affected people from South Sudan, who are fleeing the country to seek refuge in neighboring countries Ethiopia, Kenya, the Sudan and Uganda. The grant will be channelled through the World Food Program (WFP), which is presently transporting supplies to the hardest-hit communities.
Vienna, Austria, March 18, 2014. Meeting in its 146th Session, the Governing Board of the OPEC Fund for International Development (OFID) has approved financing of nearly US$264 million to boost socio-economic development in over 30 partner countries. Of the new commitments, over US$193m will support 10 public sector loans and nine grants. The bulk of the public sector funding will co-finance agriculture, transportation, education, energy, health and water supply and sanitation projects.
August 22, 2013, Vienna, Austria. The OPEC Fund for International Development (OFID) has approved a US$400,000 grant in humanitarian aid to assist families in the Sudan affected by severe flooding that has destroyed homes and public infrastructure. The grant, which will be channelled through the Riyadh-based Arab Red Crescent and Red Cross Organization (ArabRCRC), will be used to procure urgently-needed relief items.
January 10, 2013, Vienna, Austria. An OFID delegation has participated in the inauguration of the Roseires dam, which lies on the Blue Nile some 550 km southeast of the Sudanese capital Khartoum. Sudan’s President Omar Al-Bashir inaugurated the newly-expanded dam, which now holds 7.4 billion m3 of water - double its former capacity. At the event, President Al-Bashir awarded OFID the Order of the Two Niles, First Degree, in appreciation of the institution’s long-standing cooperation with his country.
The Governing Board of the OPEC Fund for International Development (OFID), meeting in its 137th Session, has approved over US$160 million in new loans and grants to pursue socio-economic development in partner countries. The loans are as follows:
February 3, 2009 Vienna, Austria - Eleven developing countries in Africa, Asia and the Caribbean are to benefit from fresh financing extended by the OPEC Fund for International Development (OFID). The loans were signed on behalf of OFID by Mr. Suleiman J. Al-Herbish, OFID Director-General, along with representatives of the beneficiary countries.
The majority of the financing, which totals US$118.8 million, will support projects aimed at bolstering the transportation sectors of the recipient countries.
August 20 , 2004, Vienna, Austria - The OPEC Fund for International Development has extended an emergency assistance grant of US$200,000 to procure urgently-needed supplies and support relief efforts to help refugees who have been forced to leave their homes as a result of the armed conflict that has erupted in the Darfur region of Western Sudan.
September 16, 2003, Vienna, Austria - The OPEC Fund for International Development today approved a grant of US$700,000 to support the Special Program for Food Security (SPFS) of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO).
September 24, 2002 - Vienna, Austria - The OPEC Fund for International Development has approved a grant of US$1 million to finance an OPEC Fund-UNFPA Project for HIV/AIDS Prevention in Selected Arab Countries. Targeting seven countries, namely, Lebanon, Morocco, Palestine, Somalia, the Sudan, Syria and Yemen, the scheme is the second of a series to be financed from the Fund's dedicated HIV/AIDS account.
