UN Volunteers in Sudan, in collaboration with UNDP Sudan, other UN agencies and International Youth Forum celebrated International Youth Day in Khartoum, under the theme ‘Youth4Peace'. The celebrations, which took place with the participation of the Federal Minister of Youth and Sports, government officials, civil society representatives and community advocates, hosted two forums, one on public policy and another on the role of youth in peacebuilding.
The United Nations Volunteers (UNV) programme is relieved at the release from captivity on Sunday 13 December of Ms Pamela Ncube, a UNV volunteer serving with the African Union-United Nations Mission in Darfur (UNAMID), together with her UNAMID colleague Mr Patrick Winful.
Ms Ncube and Mr Winful were abducted in the town of Zalingei in West Darfur on 29 August.
Khartoum and Juba, Sudan: Registration of voters has begun for Sudan's historic 2010 election, and UNV volunteers will be making a significant contribution to the electoral process.
At the time of writing there are 96 UNV volunteers involved, and 46 more are expected to arrive in November.
Wau, Sudan: As a UNV volunteer Building Project Manager with the United Nations Mission in Sudan (UNMIS), Febe Chang gets involved with every aspect of the mission's engineering needs - but despite the tough conditions is never too busy to share her knowledge with others.
A graduate of civil engineering in her native Philippines, Ms. Chang learnt about UNV through a friend who encouraged her to fill in her personal details via the UNV website.
Kadugli, Sudan: A group of UNV volunteers working in Sudan is uniting to volunteer after hours and encourage local people to volunteer in their community.
There are 17 UNV volunteers in Kadugli, Southern Kordofan, assigned to the United Nations Mission in Sudan (UNMIS) and UNDP in a variety of roles.
Ramallah, Palestinian Territory: On 18 December 2008 UNV and the Palestinian Economic Council for Development and Reconstruction (PECDAR) signed a 'Letter of Intent' for the recruitment of Palestinian nationals for international UNV volunteer assignments.

Juba, Sudan: Greetings from Juba, South Sudan. November is the beginning of the dry season here and I am enjoying the nice weather, heat and dusty roads. The beginning of the dry season means the beginning of the return season - those who fled from their homeland because of the protracted civil war have started coming back to South Sudan.
I now serve as an External Relations Officer at the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in South Sudan.
El Fasher, Darfur, Sudan: The UNV contribution to the year-old African Union-United Nations Hybrid Operation in Darfur (UNAMID) is underway, with more than half of the volunteers in place or scheduled to arrive soon.
Due to the dangerous conditions in Darfur, international civilian staff are being brought in incrementally. However, more than 200 UNV volunteers have already arrived to support the African Union-led peacekeeping mission and the contingent already represents a third of the international civilian staff currently in place.
UNV volunteers are not young, fresh college graduates entering the job market. They are experienced professionals providing their expertise in community development projects around the world. In a recent interview with the German public radio station Deutsche Welle, Joyce Yu, Deputy Executive Coordinator of UNV, talked about who the UNV volunteers are and what they do.
KHARTOUM, 22 July 2005 - Increasing the recognition of and support to volunteers and volunteer involving organizations in helping Sudan meet the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) is the theme of a one-day conference to be held in the capital city on 25 July.
International Day of Peacekeepers
BONN, 27 May 2005 - As the United Nations commemorates the third International Day of UN Peacekeepers on 29 May, paying tribute to those who serve in peacekeeping operations, United Nations Volunteers (UNV) are also being honoured for their dedication and courage in helping improve the lives of millions of people in war-torn and post-conflict countries across the globe.
More than 1,800 UN Volunteers are currently supporting UN peacekeeping operations in 11 countries worldwide: Afghanistan (UNAMA), Burundi (UNOB), Democratic Republic of the Congo …
BONN, 29 March 2005 -- Following the UN Security Council's decision last week to form the UN Mission in Sudan (UNMIS), some 160 United Nations Volunteers (UNVs) will be deployed over the coming months to Sudan to support the peace process in the region.
Axel Melinon of France knows the media-labeled Darfur crisis all too well. As one of 23 UN Volunteers currently on the ground in Chad, he spends his days caring for some 15,000 Sudanese refugees that refer to Bahai, a small desert outpost situated along the north-eastern Chad-Sudan border, as their temporary home.
Axel, 30, who arrived in Chad in May 2004 to work with the UN refugee agency (UNHCR) as a refugee protection officer, was quickly sent to Bahai to set-up UNHCR's office and coordinate the transition of the refugees.
KHARTOUM, 17 September 2002 -- A team of lawyers mobilized by the Bonn-based United Nations Volunteers programme (UNV) in a record three-week period has taken up assignments in five Sudanese cities to help determine the refugee status of some 300,000 Eritreans currently in the country.
