1,750 refugees residing in Sudan have been resettled to Canada with the support of IOM Sudan so far this year, reaching 50% of Canada’s Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship commitment to resettle of 3,500 refugees residing in Sudan in this fiscal year ending 31 March 2017.

Canada was one of the major donors during Sudan’s peace negotiations in Kenya that led to the signing of the 2005 Comprehensive Peace Agreement. Later, Canada joined the international community in supporting the reconstruction of South Sudan which is set to become a republic on July 9. The country has been following the developments in Juba and Khartoum keenly and applying diplomatic pressure on both sides to respect and implement the CPA. The new Canadian High Commissioner to Kenya spoke to FRED OLUOCH about the country’s ultimate plans for Sudan
