Geneva — IOM, the UN Migration Agency, reports that 100,630 migrants and refugees entered Europe by sea in 2018 through 4 November, including 49,013 to Spain, the region’s most active destination point this year, with just under 50 per cent of all 2018 arrivals. The region’s total arrivals through the recent weekend compare with 154,825 arrivals across the region through the same period last year, and 337,773 at this point in 2016 (see chart below).

MIXED MIGRATION FLOWS TO EUROPE

Between July and September 2018, a total of 45,092 migrants and refugees arrived in Europe, 14 per cent more than the 39,402 registered in the second quarter and two and a half times the 18,956 registered in the first three months of the year. More than a half (53%) of arrivals were registered as land and sea arrivals to Spain (24,361). Greece has received the second largest caseload of arrivals (14,226), three times more than 4,447 arrivals registered in Italy during this reporting period (July – September 2018).

Between 1 January and 30 September 2018, some 99,500 refugees and migrants crossed the Mediterranean Sea from North Africa and Turkey. Most crossed the Western Mediterranean from Morocco to Spain.

Geneva – IOM, the UN Migration Agency, reports that 86,436 migrants and refugees entered Europe by sea in 2018 through 7 October, with 39,445 to Spain, the leading destination this year. In fact, since late September’s arrivals were reported, Spain in 2018 has now received via the Mediterranean more irregular migrants than it did throughout all the years 2015, 2016 and 2017 combined.

The region’s total arrivals through the recent weekend compare with 140,272 arrivals across the region through the same period last year, and 318,207 at this point in 2016.

Geneva – IOM, the UN Migration Agency, reports that 65,576 migrants and refugees entered Europe by sea in 2018 through 22 August, with 27,577 to Spain, the leading destination this year. This compares with 120,624 arrivals across the region through the same period last year, and 271,951 at this point in 2016.

Geneva – IOM, the UN Migration Agency, reports that 63,142 migrants and refugees entered Europe by sea in 2018 through 16 August, with 26,350 to Spain, the leading destination this year. This compares with 119,137 arrivals across the region through the same period last year, and 266,423 at this point in 2016.

Geneva – IOM, the UN Migration Agency, reports that 57,571 migrants and refugees entered Europe by sea through 29 July 2018. That total compares to 112,375 at this time last year.

Spain is currently the main arrival-by-sea country in the Mediterranean with 22,858 migrants arriving since the beginning of the year and 1,866 of them arriving since 25 July alone. This is approximately 16,345 more migrants than arrived in Spain in the same period in 2017.

Arrivals to Spain (see chart below) this month have overtaken those to Italy. To date just over 36 per cent of all Mediterranean irregular migrants have come via the Western Mediterranean route, whose irregular migration volume has more than tripled those registered at this time last year.

In July, there were 15 400 detections of illegal border crossings on the four main migratory routes into the EU as the number of migrants arriving in Italy fell by more than half from the previous month. Spain continued to see the heaviest migratory pressure since 2009.

The total number of detections in the first seven months of 2017 fell by two-thirds from the same period of last year to 127 100.
