BANGKOK, 7 September 2012 (IRIN) - Most countries in Asia have yet to make the rotavirus vaccine part of their national immunization programme (NIP), despite a World Health Organization (WHO) recommendation to do so.

"Timely vaccination with one of the two effective rotavirus vaccines [Rotarix and Rotateq] can prevent many cases of [rotavirus] illness and hospitalizations," WHO's Manila office said in an email to IRIN on 7 September. "WHO recommends the inclusion of rotavirus vaccine in the national immunization schedules of all countries."

Between May and September 2011, a number of disasters including floods and storms continued to devastate Asia and the Pacific region.

Floods occurred in China from June onwards, affecting over 36 million people and killing at least 355 people. Despite direct economic losses of nearly US$6.5 billion, no international assistance was requested.

LONDON (AlertNet) - Amid frequent headlines about conflict-ridden Somalia, Afghanistan and Sudan, it is easy to overlook less well publicised emergencies in other parts the world. Yet some of these forgotten crises are likely to intensify in 2010, aggravating human suffering.

Here is a selection of some of the under-reported humanitarian emergencies at risk of deteriorating this year.

01 Nov 2009 description

Each week, the World Health Organization Health Action in Crises in Geneva produces information highlights on critical health-related activities in countries where there are humanitarian crises. Drawing on the various WHO programmes, contributions cover activities from field and country offices and the support provided by WHO regional offices and headquarters. The mandate of the WHO departments specifically concerned with Emergency and Humanitarian Action in Crises is to increase the effectiveness of the WHO contribution to crisis preparedness and response, transition and recovery.

Each year more than 12 million people are forced to flee their homes. Episcopal Relief & Development is working with church partners to respond to the needs of people in crisis, especially in the wake of recent surges of violence that have displaced thousands of people.

In Sri Lanka, the conflict between the government and the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) has worsened. The UN reports that at least 230,000 people have been displaced by the fighting in the north of the country.

CRWRC in the Philippines

On September 28, 2006, the Luzon district of the Philippines was struck by typhoon Mileyno.  The high winds and unusually heavy rains devastated this poor area of the Philippines.  Poor farmers lost their crops, fishermen and farm labourers lost their jobs.

CRWRC provided immediate aid to those in need with immediate food and water and temporary shelter.
