Special Envoy for Sahel, High Commissioner for Refugees, Minister for Economic Community of West African States Also Speak
In a high-level meeting on the Sahel this morning, the Security Council called for the finalization of an integrated strategy for the north-African region encompassing security, governance, human rights, humanitarian needs and development, while it strongly condemned terrorism, human rights abuses and the destruction of historic sites in Mali.
The Security Council in December planned to intensify its focus on the Sahel, particularly the crisis in Mali, along with continued consideration of a range of situations around the world, the Permanent Representative of Morocco said as he briefed correspondents at Headquarters on the programme of work for his country’s presidency of the body.

Addis Ababa, Ethiopia 24 October 2012- The African Union (AU) will continue to do everything in its power to resolve the situation between Sudan and South Sudan, as well as that in Mali. African Union Commission Chairperson Dr Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma said this while addressing the 339th meeting of the AU’s Peace and Security Council (AUPSC) at Ministerial level, in Addis Ababa today.
9 October 2012 – Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon today announced the appointment of former Italian Prime Minister Romano Prodi as his new Special Envoy for the Sahel region in West Africa.
“The Secretary-General looks forward to Mr. Prodi’s leadership in shaping and mobilizing an effective United Nations and international response to the complex crisis plaguing the countries and people of this region,” said Mr. Ban’s spokesperson.

The DLCC recommended that all possibilities be explored in order to ensure appropriate and smooth continuity of all Desert Locust Information Service (DLIS) activities in the future, including succession planning for the Senior Officer (Locust Forecasting) post.
Women, peace and security, the rule of law, and the Middle East would be discussed in open debates this month at the Security Council, the Permanent Representative of Guatemala said this afternoon as he introduced the agenda for his October presidency of that body.

Le Conseil des droits de l'homme a adopté, ce matin, six résolutions, portant notamment sur la situation des droits de l'homme en République arabe syrienne et au Mali, ainsi que sur l'assistance technique dans le domaine des droits de l'homme au Soudan et au Soudan du Sud. Deux autres résolutions portent respectivement sur les droits de l'homme des personnes âgées et les droits de l'homme et les peuples autochtones.
As many as 20 million people are facing chronic food shortages across the Sahel region of West Africa - some of whom are on the brink of starvation. Resilience has been debilitated in West Africa due to cyclical droughts, poverty, desertification, political conflict and insufficient food production - and with climate change things are only set to get worse.

La menace du criquet pèlerin se précise sur les cultures et les pâturages du Niger et du Mali depuis que des essaims de ces insectes sont arrivés le mois dernier dans les régions septentrionales des deux pays, en provenance d'Algérie et de Libye.
Les infestations acridiennes furent d'abord signalées en janvier 2012 près de Ghat, dans le sud-ouest de la Libye, ainsi que dans le sud-est de l'Algérie.

Minister of State for Trade and Development, Joe Costello, today announced €7.25 million to provide emergency food, water and healthcare to communities affected by a severe drought in the Sahel region of Africa and by conflict in Sudan and South Sudan.
This is in addition to €8.2 million which the Minister allocated at the start of the year to support the emergency relief effort in both regions.
