KHARTOUM (Mar 10, 1997 06:13 a.m. EST) - Sudan has said that Uganda attacked two border towns in the south to support rebels fighting the Khartoum government.

State television interrupted its regular broadcast late on Sunday to read a statement from the armed forces saying that the rebels had launched their attacks from Uganda and Zairean areas under Ugandan influence.

"The bombing of Bazi was conducted from the Zairean towns of Ariwara and Ambakolo which are overrun by Tutsi rebels supported by Uganda," said the official statement.

GENEVA -- (Department of Humanitarian Affairs) -- As hostilities mount in the Sudan, the United Nations today appealed for US $120.8 million to meet the emergency humanitarian needs of the estimated 4.2 million war-affected and displaced persons in the Sudan, many of whom are struggling to cope with chronic malnutrition and the alarming increase of infectious diseases. Persistent insecurity combined with natural disasters, including crop failures and floods in the Sudan, have worsened the plight of almost all vulnerable groups who are already living below subsistence levels.
