New York, July 31, 1998 - A new $30,000 grant from Lutheran World Relief is helping famine stricken people in southern Sudan. War and drought has left hundreds of thousands displaced and now starving. According to a recent appeal from Action by Churches Together (ACT), an international coalition of relief agencies including LWR, an estimated 150,000 people in Sudan face starvation and death in the next month without further assistance.

EASTERN AFRICA AND THE HORN
Relief Flows Are Below Target in Sudan, but Airlift Capacity Is Increasing

Sudan

The humanitarian crisis in southern Sudan continues to deepen. The international response has increased markedly since April, but severe malnutrition rates and reports of hunger-related deaths continue to rise. Rainfall has been poor this agricultural season, and the September - October harvest will not significantly reduce relief needs.
