SENS was conducted for South Sudanese refugee camps in White Nile State, Sudan to assess the general health and nutrition status of the refugee population, and formulate workable recommendations for appropriate nutritional and public health interventions. Results indicate critical (>15%) global acute malnutrition (GAM) across all camps, with severe acute malnutrition (SAM) above emergency levels (>2%). The findings also point to the wider effects of chronic under-funding for the response, especially for WASH, health and livelihoods assistance.

MIGRANT BASELINE

The 21th round of data collection took place in July and August 2018. During this round a revised version of the data collection methodology was used to capture additional information on the needs and challenges migrants are facing.

DTM identified there to be at least 669,176 migrants in Libya. Migrants were identified in all baladiyas, within 554 communities and originated from more than 41 countries.

Since conflict erupted in Tonga in March 2017, most of the population fled to New Fangak as IDPs, and to Liri in Sudan as refugees. In July 2017, IDPs from New Fangak started to return to Tonga. As people kept on returning, an alert for humanitarian assistance was signalled in January 2018 to provide services to the returnees and IDPs in Tonga. In March 2018, UNOCHA coordinated an intervention conducted by humanitarian actors from Malakal and UNCHR as Protection Cluster Lead Agency provided S-NFIs to 200 persons with special needs (PSNs).

The 2017 Sudan Participatory Assessment, conducted between October and December 2017, involved 6,009 Persons of Concern to UNHCR engaged through some 385 semi-structured interviews, focus group discussions, individual interviews and participatory observation sessions. This assessment exercise was conducted by UNHCR in collaboration with partners, actively supported by the Government of Sudan, to engage refugees, asylum-seekers and refugee returnees – women, men, girls and boys of di fferent age, gender, nationality and ability – to identify their needs and examine ways to address them.

In May, the Mixed Migration Monitoring Mechanism Initiative (4Mi) conducted 370 in-depth interviews with migrants and refugees in West Africa, including 88 people in Agadez and Niamey in Niger; 200 people in Mopti, Gao, Ber and Timbuktu in Mali and 82 people in Dori in Burkina Faso.

Profiles

In May, 253 men and 117 women from 15 countries in Central and Western Africa were interviewed, with an average age of 28 years.

Summary

A total of 194,891 beneficiaries registered / verified / tracked since the beginning of 2018, in which 134,330 (21,624 IDPs and 113,454 returnees) were properly registered, while the remaining 60,561 individuals were tracked in different locations. Out of the tracked beneficiaries, 11,086 were South Sudanese who crossed the borders to Sudan through Abyie, 47,180 were returnees (33,067 returned to Sudan from Saudi Arabia and 14,113 returned to different areas in North Darfur State) and 2,295 were IDPs in South Kordofan State.
