The number of fires in camps for displaced people in Darfur has flared up in the past two weeks, raising concerns for their strength and leaving dozens of families in the open.

On Sunday, the camps in Gireida locality, South Darfur, saw another fire at Babanusa which led to the destruction of 102 homes.

Displaced people in Babanusa camp informed Radio Dabanga that the fire caused burns to 60-year-old Aisha Musa. About 43 homes were partially destroyed.

Three separate fires on Sunday and Monday caused the destruction of dozens of houses in two camps for displaced people and a cotton production site in Darfur and El Gedaref.

A fire broke out in Kalma camp in South Darfur on Sunday, destroying 51 houses. Dozens of families are left in the open without shelter, a Sheikh in the camp reported.

Mubarak Mohamed Ahmed told Radio Dabanga that the fire broke out in Block 8 at 11 am. Twelve other homes were partially destroyed. “The damages are still being counted. The cause for the fire has not yet been identified.”

A huge fire that broke out at the market of El Salam camp for the displaced near the South Darfur capital of Nyala, has destroyed more than 450 shops.

“The fire erupted at the market at 3 am on Friday. Because of the strong wind, the flames could spread rapidly,” one of the victims told Radio Dabanga.

“More than 450 shops were destroyed, including groceries, perfume shops, shops selling building materials, in addition to restaurants, cafeterias, and a number of stores.”

On 17 March 2018, more than 2500 families were affected by a fire that ravaged parts of El Neem C for internally displaced persons, in East Darfur.

A UNAMD Team, led by Mr. Innih Akpan, Officer in Charge, East Darfur office, visited the Camp to identify the damage and losses caused by the fire.

A massive fire destroyed more than 1,000 homes in the displaced camps district of Ed Daein on East Darfur. No human casualties were reported, however the four camps of Dabanga, Areida, Garnaya, and Um Sauna suffered extensive damage.

The fire completely destroyed 15 shops and storage facilities at Dabanga Market. One of the camp sheikhs told Dabanga Radio that at least 1,000 families have been affected and that the preliminary inventory estimated the damage at about SDG 40 billion (*$2 million).

Intense winds fanned a fire that started in El Masani district east of El Fasher in North Darfur on Sunday evening.

Witnesses told radio Dabanga that the fire broke out and quickly spread. At least 20 homes were laid waste, their contents completely destroyed. There were no casualties nor injuries reported, however no value can yet be placed on the substantial material damage.

The families from the homes destroyed by the fire are now reportedly destitute and living in the open without shelter after all of their belongings and food supplied went up in smoke.

UNAMID’s Joint Special Representative (JSR), Jeremiah Mamabolo, accompanied by Amy Martin, UN Deputy Humanitarian Coordinator for Darfur, and Major-General Fida Hussain, Acting Force Commander, UNAMID, visited the victims of the recent fire at Korma camp for internally displaced persons (IDPs), North Darfur, on 15 June 2017. The fire occurred on 9 June and destroyed some 700 homes; five displaced persons were killed as well.

More than 600 people have been left homeless, destitute, and without food after a fire that broke out at camp El Neem north of Ed Daein in East Darfur destroyed 100 homes on Wednesday.

One of the camp sheikhs explained that the intense wind helped the fire to spread. Provisions and agricultural crops were also destroyed, however no injuries or loss of life were reported.

The sheikh appealed to the authorities and organisations to speed up the provision of aid to those affected.

May 30 - 2015 MERSHING

A massive fire that broke out at El Doma camp in Mershing locality, South Darfur, has destroyed the full contents of eighteen houses and eight shelters on Thursday.

Camp sheikh Adam Ahmed Eisa told Radio Dabanga that the fire displaced a number of families, and caused a significant damage to their livelihoods.

He added that the fire was the second of it kind in two months, and called upon the humantiarian organisations to speed up their provision of assistance to the affected families.

A boy was injured in a large fire that broke out in Kalma camp for the displaced near Nyala, capital of South Darfur, on Saturday.

Saleh Eisa, Secretary-General of Kalma camp, with more than 160,000 residents one of the largest camps in Darfur, told Radio Dabanga that four-year-old Abdelmajeed Mohamed Abdeljabar sustained burns when the fire broke out at Block 8.

“30 homes were destroyed, and 22 other shelters were partially damaged,” he reported. “Two goats and a donkey burned to death.”

YASSIN LOCALITY (16 Dec.) - A massive fire that broke out in Labado camp for the displaced in East Darfur on Friday afternoon, has led to the death of a woman, and the injury of four others. Hundreds of homes burned to the ground.

“The fire was sparked by children who tried to cook some food,” camp sheikh Ibrahim Adam Baraka explained to Radio Dabanga.

“The fire spread extremely fast over the camp. Salwa Adam El Nur (20) burned to death, and four others sustained serious burns. The camp hospital, a mosque, and 354 houses, were destroyed.”

SIRBA LOCALITY (10 Dec.) - A fire that broke out at Armankul camp for the displaced in Sirba locality, West Darfur, on Monday, destroyed a number of homes.

“The material damage was estimated at about SDG5,000 ($873), besides the loss of 250 (100kg) sacks of millet, 200 sacks of sorghum, 30 sacks of dry okra, and five barrels of diesel,” the coordinator of the Sirba camps told Radio Dabanga. “Many camp gardens were also destroyed.”

KALMA CAMP (25 Nov.) - On Monday morning, 98 displaced villagers from the Labado area in East Darfur arrived at camp Kalma East. The fled their homes when pro-government militiamen burned their villages on Friday.

Saleh Mohamed Issa, the Secretary-General of the Kalma camps told Radio Dabanga that the newcomers came from the villages of Chawa and Tebeldiyat Timan.

Issa said that the newly displaced reported that in addition to the villages, vast areas of farms were destroyed. Abdel Jabbar Adam Suleiman and Juma Yousif Adam were seriously injured in the attacks.

EL SALAM CAMP / DEREIG CAMP (26 Oct.) - On Saturday, a fire broke out in El Salam camp for the displaced near Nyala, capital of South Darfur. Four shelters burned to ashes. On the same day, five homes at the nearby Dereig camp were destroyed by fire.

Speaking to Radio Dabanga, an El Salam camp elder reported that the strong wind on Saturday fanned a small fire that started in one of the houses so that spread rapidly over the southern part of the camp.

GIREIDA (25 Feb.) -

A fire that broke out in an Islamic Centre in Gireida, South Darfur, on Sunday, wounded three women, and burned 13 houses to ashes.

Speaking to Radio Dabanga, an eyewitness reported that on Sunday fire broke out in the Islamic Centre of Sheikh Ahmaday in Gireida. Three women were injured, two of them seriously.

The fire also destroyed stores and stables. 250 large sacks of sorghum and 180 sheep were lost.

A massive fire on Sunday in the town of Tullus, South Darfur, led to the burning of 40 houses. In West Darfur nine houses were destroyed by fire on Monday.

One of the victims in Tullus told Radio Dabanga that the fire broke out in a thatched hut and spread from there to burn about 40 houses. The losses are estimated at SDG700,000 ($122,000). He appealed to humanitarian organisations and the authorities to help the affected.
