Afghanistan: The number of severely food insecure has risen to 1.5 million people, according to a new assessment. 7.3 million people are moderately food insecure. Food security among IDPs is worsening, with around 200,000 people reported to be in need of immediate assistance.

The death toll of the heatwave that is striking Sudan's Northern State increased to 16 on Saturday.

The authorities of Wadi Halfa at the Sudanese-Egyptian border, announced on Saturday that an Egyptian expatriate died that morning of a heatstroke.

Two others were admitted to the Wadi Halfa Hospital in a bad condition. One of them, an Ethiopian, was transferred to the intensive care unit.

A heatwave has killed at least 15 people in Sudan in the past two days, the country's Health ministry confirmed on Friday.

The deaths occurred in Wadi Halfa, a town near Sudan's border with Egypt.

Ms Saeeda Abdul Wahab, a health official in the town, said two people died on Friday morning.

"The Northern State authorities ordered the closure of all schools for one week. They have also warned people to stay indoors during the hottest time of the day and to drink plenty of water,’’ she added.

Nine people reportedly died of heatstroke over the past three days in the hospital of Wadi Halfa, near the Sudanese-Egyptian border, owing to a heat wave that is sweeping the country.

Mohamed Hassan Shanan, medical director of the Wadi Halfa hospital told reporters on Wednesday, that the authorities have increased electricity supplies to the hospital in order to cover the growing number of patients because of the heatwave. “Nevertheless nine of them died.”

There are now more than 3.1 million IDPs across 3,613 locations in Iraq; 300,000 people have been displaced from and within Anbar since military operations began in April.

A delayed onset of the rainy season, followed by poorly-distributed rainfall, has led to abnormal dryness across Burkina Faso, the central and northern parts of Ghana, Togo, and Benin, western and southern Niger, and northern Nigeria. The lack of rainfall over the past several weeks has delayed planting and negatively affected cropping activities over many local areas.

There are now 1.26 million IDPs in the country – a 24% increase since mid-June. Only 20% of the fuel needed is available in the country, which is impacting upon all basic needs.

• Severe weather, including thunderstorms, strong winds, heavy rain, hail and tornadoes affected several areas of Midwest and Mid-Atlantic United States on 21-23 June. Several tornadoes were reported in the states of Illinois, Iowa, Kansas and Michigan on 22 June.
• According to media (as of 23 June), seven people were injured and several damages occurred, mostly in the area of Coal City in northern Illinois.

Typhoon Bopha has made landfall in the southern Philippines on 4 December, carrying winds of up to 160 kilometres an hour. More than 294,000 people have been affected in seven provinces, according to Government estimates. Severe rains have affected at least 6,500 people in Panama, prompting the Government of Panama to declare a state of emergency for the regions of La Chorrera, Capira and Colón.
