IOM Land and Barge Return Operations Recommence to South Sudan in December

On 1 December, IOM restarted its land and barge return operations as part of the Joint Organized Return Plan operations for the 2007 return season. In December IOM completed four land and one barge movement returning a total of 199 Heads of Household comprising 745 individuals to Upper Nile, South Kordofan and Unity States.

Following the confirmation of importation of wild polio virus to South Darfur in October (Date of onset of paralysis on September 9), Southern Sudan conducted 2 rounds of NIDs in Oct/Nov and December. The NIDs in October were staggered in two phases- the first phase was conducted from 29-31 October 2007 and the second from 5-7 November 2007. The December round was conducted from 5-7.

El Fasher / N. Darfur - The Joint United Nations / African Union Mission in Darfur (UNAMID) has formally taken over from the African Union Mission in the Sudan (AMIS) in an official ceremony at the new mission headquarters in El Fasher, this morning.

The ceremony kicked off with a formal salutation of the flag of the African Union, before it was lowered.

Dec 31 (Reuters) - Ethiopia and Egypt will send 850 troops each early in the new year to serve with a joint United Nations-African Union force (UNAMID) in Sudan's troubled Darfur region, an AU official told Reuters on Monday.

The 26,000-strong mission will absorb a struggling AU force which has failed to stem the violence in Sudan's remote west.

As the north-south conflict unfolded in Sudan, displaced families from the south took refuge in squatter settlements and camps for internally displaced persons (IDPs) on the outskirts of Khartoum. In these camps and settlements, IDPs have had little access to basic education and social services. Some children attend classes in neighboring communities, but for most families, the cost to transport their children to distant schools is prohibitive.

Competition over land and natural resources has long been a source of tension between different groups in Sudan. In colonial times, confrontation mainly took place over land access, especially among pastoralists and between pastoralists and farmers. The British administration accepted customary rules over land, though the title to land was vested in the government. The Native Administration was delegated to arbitrate between different groups.

We interviewed over 900 individuals and carried out direct and participant observation in manyattas (the social, cultural, political, and economic unit for an extended family or several families), kraals (mobile cattle camps/fortified cattle enclosures) and town centers throughout Karamoja.
