Between 1 January and 30 September 2018, 3,254 unaccompanied and separated children arrived in Italy by sea, representing 16 per cent of all sea arrivals in this period. Consistent with an overall decrease in sea arrivals this year so far, the number of UASC reaching Italian shores in the first nine months of 2018 is considerably lower than in the same period last year, when over 13,800 landed in Italy. However, the proportion of UASC among sea arrivals in the January-September 2018 period (16 per cent) is slightly higher than in January-September 2017 (13 per cent).

MIGRANT BASELINE

The 21th round of data collection took place in July and August 2018. During this round a revised version of the data collection methodology was used to capture additional information on the needs and challenges migrants are facing.

DTM identified there to be at least 669,176 migrants in Libya. Migrants were identified in all baladiyas, within 554 communities and originated from more than 41 countries.

IOM works with national and local authorities, as well as community-based organizations, to better understand migration movements in West and Central Africa. Using tools from the Displacement Tracking Matrix (DTM) - the flow monitoring registry (FMR) and survey (FMS) - teams of enumerators work in major transit areas to monitor intra- and interregional migration movements.

However, the proportion of UASC among sea arrivals in the January-August 2018 period (15 per cent) is only slightly higher than in January-August 2017 (13 per cent).

The International Organization for Migration – IOM works with national and local authorities also local partners to identify and understand migration movements in West and Central Africa. Flow monitoring Point (FMP) is an activity that quantifies and qualifies flows, migrant profiles, trends and migration routes at a given point of entry, transit or exit. Since February 2016, IOM Niger has been monitoring migration flows at two points in the Agadez region of Niger in Arlit and Séguédine.

POPULATION MOBILITY OVERVIEW

Three major mobility patterns shaped West and Central African flows in the last three months. The first is a pattern of forced internal displacement flows, mainly as a result of the Lake Chad Basin Crisis. The Crisis directly affecting nearly 4 million persons with more than 2.27 million internally displaced persons (IDPs) and 1.49 million returns in Nigeria, Cameroon, Chad and Niger.

Les points de suivi de flux (ou en anglais Flow Monitoring Point – FMP) est une activité qui permet de quantifier et de qualifier les flux, les profils des migrants, les tendances et les routes migratoires sur un point d’entrée, de transit ou de sortie donné.

Geneva – IOM, the UN Migration Agency, reports that 57,571 migrants and refugees entered Europe by sea through 29 July 2018. That total compares to 112,375 at this time last year.

Spain is currently the main arrival-by-sea country in the Mediterranean with 22,858 migrants arriving since the beginning of the year and 1,866 of them arriving since 25 July alone. This is approximately 16,345 more migrants than arrived in Spain in the same period in 2017.

Geneva – IOM, the UN Migration Agency, reports that 53,269 migrants and refugees entered Europe by sea through 22 July 2018. That total compares to 110,603 at this time last year, and 244,722 at this time in 2016.

Arrivals to Spain (see chart below) this month have overtaken those to Italy. To date just over 36 per cent of all Mediterranean irregular migrants have come via the Western Mediterranean route, whose irregular migration volume has more than tripled those registered at this time last year.
