  • Sudan is one of the world’s least developed nations, 7.1 million people in the country require humanitarian assistance. Hunger and instability in neighboring South Sudan have caused a major influx of South Sudanese refugees into Sudan, with nearly 770,000 South Sudanese arriving since December 2013 and more likely to arrive in the coming months.

SITUATION

  • Chad is a low-income, land-locked country that suffers from chronic food insecurity due to the effects of regional conflict, frequent drought, lack of income-generating opportunities and limited access to social services. An estimated 4.4 million people in Chad require humanitarian assistance, according to the UN.

As of 30 June 2018, Ethiopia hosts 916,678 refugees and asylum seekers within its borders, including the more than 22,000 who arrived during the first quarter of 2018.

The Government of Ethiopia has committed to address the concerns of refugees, including a pledge to grant local integration to those who have lived in the country for 20 years and above.

Resettlement remains the chief durable solution for refugees in Ethiopia, but limited quotas mean that only 4,240 refugees will be referred to resettlement countries in 2018.

Geneva – IOM, the UN Migration Agency, reports that 53,269 migrants and refugees entered Europe by sea through 22 July 2018. That total compares to 110,603 at this time last year, and 244,722 at this time in 2016.

Arrivals to Spain (see chart below) this month have overtaken those to Italy. To date just over 36 per cent of all Mediterranean irregular migrants have come via the Western Mediterranean route, whose irregular migration volume has more than tripled those registered at this time last year.

Overview

During 2017, almost 38,900 refugees were submitted by UNHCR for resettlement1 to 25 countries in Europe,2 36% more than during 2016 and over three times greater than the average rate of 12,400 submissions per year during the last decade.
Between 2007 and 2016, Europe’s proportion of resettlement sub-missions globally has increased from approximately 9% to more than 18%, and in 2017 reached 52%. This is primarily due to a significant decrease globally in new submissions for resettlement, most notably to the United States of America.

A few days ago, we celebrated the centenary year of Nelson Mandela’s birth. We spoke of his example; his fortitude, his suffering and compassion, while recalling also the declaration that he and my predecessor Mary Robinson signed in 2000 on diversity and tolerance.

  • Due to the lingering effects of the 2015-2016 El Niño-induced drought and multiple consecutive droughts, an estimated 7.9 million people in Ethiopia require emergency food assistance, according to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA). An additional 8 million chronically food-insecure people are supported by the Government of Ethiopia (GoE)-led Productive Safety Net Program (PSNP).
