Animal health emergencies continue to erupt around the world at an ever-increasing pace. Increased global travel, human migration and informal trade of animals and animal products continue to intensify the risk of disease spread. Infectious diseases and other animal health threats have the potential to move rapidly within a country or around the world leading to severe socio-economic and public health consequences. For zoonoses that develop the ability for human to human transmission, an early response to an animal health emergency could prevent the next pandemic.

KHARTOUM, 9 May 2018 (UNHCR): - The UN Refugee Agency welcomed today a generous contribution of USD 2 million from the Government and people of Japan to protect and assist South Sudanese refugees in Sudan. Japan’s funding will help UNHCR work with the Government of Sudan to address the increasing humanitarian needs of South Sudanese refugees who have sought safety in Sudan due to the continued violence in their country.

The United Nations Mine Action Service (UNMAS) has received a contribution of USD 9.3 million to the United Nations Voluntary Trust Fund for Assistance in Mine Action (UN VTF) from the Government of Japan to undertake critical humanitarian mine action programming in Syria, Iraq, Afghanistan, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Sudan and South Sudan. Japan is one of the largest donors to the UN VTF providing over USD 132 million since 2010. In addition to its financial support, UNMAS benefits from the provision of Japanese in-kind personnel.

Khartoum 22 March 2018– Through the support of the Government of Japan, UN-Habitat this week launched the project ‘Support to Hosting Communities Affected by South Sudanese Refugees in White Nile State’.

The project aims to deliver safe, clean and accessible market places as centres for the hosting communities and South Sudanese refugees in Aljabalain Locality, White Nile State that prevent widespread of diseases including Acute Watery Diarrhoea (AWD).

The Government of Japan has allocated a total of US $1,173,000 in support of the International Organization for Migration’s (IOM) operations in Sudan.

The generous contribution of the amount of US$600,000 will go towards supporting the reintegration project in North and South Darfur States, and US $573,000 towards community stabilization as part of the Humanitarian and Development Nexus project in West Kordofan.
