2.7 million beneficiaries will be without WFP assistance in January 2004 !!

A 60,000 MT contribution from the USA and a donation of 9,700 MT from ECHO has been confirmed but the commodities and arrival dates are not yet known. With these two contributions the pipeline for the coming six months looks slightly better than previously feared. However, about 2.7 million beneficiaries will still be deprived of cereal rations in January.

North Korean refugees who overcome immense obstacles to reach South Korea enter a world of wealth and modernity virtually unimaginable to their compatriots who remain trapped in the retrograde totalitarian state that they left behind. They receive generous financial support from the South Korean government, but many remain on the fringes of South Korean society. They worry about their families back home and about the vulnerability of refugees who remain in China, subject to arbitrary arrest and deportation.

Washington (dpa) - The U.S. State Department Thursday said it was still deciding about sending additional food aid to North Korea, citing the lack of adequate monitoring of the food's distribution.

"Anything that North Korea would do to improve the monitoring, to improve the ability of the World Food Programme and other donors to understand ... that the food goes to people who need it would be welcome, even at this late date," said State Department spokesman Richard Boucher.
