Emergency Flood Relief and Preparedness Project
In August 1999, Typhoon Olga caused severe flood damage to East Coast villages in DPR Korea. Nearly 40,000 people lost their homes and 12 people were killed. Dykes and embankments, meant to protect the low-lying farms from the sea, collapsed, causing large areas of arable land in the already food-insecure region to be flooded, as well as loss of the anticipated 1999 harvest.
