  • Tropical Cyclone SOULIK is slightly weakening as it moves north-east over the Yellow Sea toward the western coast of South Korea and Jeju Island. On 23 August at 0.00 UTC its centre was located 200 km south-west of Jindo Island, with maximum sustained winds speed of 176km/h. Over the next 24 hours, it is forecast to make landfall as a tropical storm over or close to Seocheon-gun city (Chungcheongnam-do province, South Korea). It may continue crossing the provinces of Gyeonggi-do and Gangwon-do (South Korea), reaching the Japan Sea on the morning of 24 August UTC.

GENEVA (20 August 2018) – The reunion of separated North and South Korean families has been welcomed by the UN Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea.

“These reunions are a significant step on the path to fully respecting and honouring the human rights of all people living on the Korean peninsula and beyond,” said the Rapporteur, Tomás Ojea Quintana.
