SITUATION OVERVIEW

108,273 people (19,095 families) returned to Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA), including the first phase of returns to the Tirah Valley, which saw the return of nearly 31,000 registered IDPs (6,187 families) of the 80,000 displaced earlier in 2013. Nearly 1 million people (161,072 registered families) remain displaced across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) and FATA as a result of ongoing insecurity.

PESHAWAR, Dec 27 2013 (IPS) - Farhat Bibi, 43, was left to fend for her three young sons after her husband was killed in a bomb attack in Pakistan’s Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) three years ago. A few days later, she landed at a camp for people displaced by violence. “The camp proved to be a blessing in disguise,” she says.

QUETTA: A polio team administering vaccination to children in Pashtoonabad on Sunday, was attacked by militants, injuring four people including a minor girl.

Police said militants hurled a hand-held bomb at the polio team, which left a five-year-old girl and a lady health worker injured, besides two others.

The girl was quickly shifted to civil hospital Quetta for medical treatment.

The blast also damaged a portion of a mud-walled house in the area.

In Syria, government military aircraft targeted rebel-held districts in the northern city of Aleppo, killing at least 15 people according to opposition activists. In parallel, Damascus announced that it had retaken control of the key Damascus – Homs supply highway after gaining ground in the battle for the strategic Qalamoun region. London and Washington decided to suspend all non-lethal assistance to the Syrian opposition fearing that military equipment may fall under the control of Islamic radical groups.

In Syria, the conflict has been going on for over 1,000 days, and to date, the war has displaced 6.5 million people internally and forced 2.3 million to cross into neighbouring countries. Meanwhile, Washington indicated that it has been in talks with Islamist opposition factions non-linked to Al-Qaeda, in order to push for a negotiated settlement to the crisis.

ISLAMABAD: According to the recent National Nutrition Survey, around 60 per cent of Pakistan’s total population is facing food insecurity, and in these households, almost 50 per cent women and children were malnourished.

The findings of this survey were presented in a research conference of the Population Association of Pakistan (PAP) at National University of Science and Technology (Nust) on Wednesday.

The survey showed that stunting (short height for age), wasting (low weight for height) and micronutrient deficiencies were widespread in Pakistan.
