Highlights

  • We have reached 49,310 children in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and FATA with protective services as of end of December, including 21,165 girls. Life saving mine risk education has been provided to 64,884 children and community members in 2012.

  • More funding for child protection in KP and FATA is urgently needed to continue programs in 2013. Lack of funding has forced World Vi- sion to end its child protection support in Jalozai Camp, and UNICEF to end its child protection support in New Durrani Camp, as of the end of 2012.

Tropical cyclone Evan hit Samoa and Fiji on 13 and 16 December. As a category 4 storm, Evan caused significant damage to homes and infrastructure on both islands. 3,500 people were evacuated to emergency shelters in Fiji. In Samoa 1,500 were evacuated and 2 killed.Typhoon Bopha (Pablo) made landfall in the southern Philippines on 4 December, carrying winds of up to 160 kilometres an hour.

SUMMARY

• Analysis of MUAC (Mid Upper Arm Circumference) screening trend data from CMAM (Community Management of Acute Malnutrition) programs in Sindh and Baluchistan shows worse nutrition situation as compared to last year. More in-depth assessment and follow up survey to gauge the actual change since 2010 is required.

• 2012 Monsoon Nutrition response has been scaled up in this month reaching 107,052 children under five and 51,173 Pregnant and Lactating (PLW.) This is about 47% of targets for MHOP 2012 which ends by mid-March.
