South Asia has made substantial progress in reducing HIV risks and vulnerability among children, adolescents, pregnant women and mothers. In 2017, the estimated number of children under 5 years old newly diagnosed with HIV was 43 per cent lower than the comparable estimate in 2010 — a decline greater than the 35 per cent recorded globally. The estimated share of those aged 0–14 living with HIV who had been initiated on lifesaving antiretroviral therapy (ART) was 73 per cent in 2017, an increase of nearly 50 percentage points from 2010.

UNHCR’S SELF–RELIANCE AND LIVELIHOODS PROGRAMME

In recent years, UNHCR has given increased priority to promoting self-reliance for refugees and other persons of concern (PoCs)*.

Self-reliance is a vital part of enhancing refugees’ protection, empowerment, and resilience. It is a cross-cutting theme described throughout UNHCR’s Strategic Directions 2017-2021, and highlighted in the High Commissioner’s guidance to prepare annual plans for 2019.

As a Cluster Lead Agency, UNDP has commissioned an independent prospective evaluation on the scope of the Global Cluster for Early Recovery (GCER) at global level and on the work of the Early Recovery clusters/sectors in countries where clusters/sectors were formally activated by the IASC. The purpose of the evaluation was two-fold: firstly, to evaluate the overall effectiveness of GCER coordination, and secondly to support UNDP’s consideration of the most appropriate way to support Early Recovery in the future.

There is increasing recognition that menstrual hygiene management (MHM) is a multi-sectoral issue that requires integrated action, particularly from the education, health and water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) sectors.

Numerous studies have shown that the lack of MHM-friendly facilities and support for schoolgirls and female teachers is a barrier to their full participation in school and thus to quality education.

HIGHLIGHTS

DTM flow monitoring data compiled from national authorities and IOM offices show that the number of arrivals through Mediterranean routes between January and March 2018 is half the number of arrivals in the same period in 2017. In the first quarter of 2018 a total of 1,956 migrants and asylum seekers arrived in Europe using different land and sea routes, in comparison to 34,531 registered in the first quarter of 2017. As previously reported, the decrease is mainly due to the drop in arrivals in Italy.
