Overview

Between 1 January and 31 July 2018, 18,510 persons arrived in Italy by sea. This is an 81 per cent decrease compared to sea arrivals in the same period last year (95,213). Just over 1,900 persons reached Italian shores in July 2018, a significant reduction compared to arrivals in June (3,136) and May (3,963). The reduction is even more significant when compared to the numbers of refugees and migrants crossing the sea to Italy in June 2017, when 11,461 registered at landing points.

The majority of those returned to Turkey are Pakistani nationals (39 per cent of total). Syrians constitute 18 per cent of the total number of those returned, and are followed by Algerians, Bangladeshis and Afghans.
In total, 304 Syrians have been returned to Turkey to date. 31 of them have been returned on the basis that their asylum claims were found inadmissible at 2nd instance.
Of all those returned, 47 per cent did not express a will to apply for asylum or withdrew their will to apply for asylum or withdrew their asylum claims in Greece.

TRENDS AND KEY FIGURES

In April, nearly 7,300 refugees and migrants entered Europe via Italy, Greece and Spain, bringing the number of refugees and migrants who have arrived by land and sea routes to these three countries to nearly 24,300 in the first four months of 2018. This marks a significant decrease of 49% compared to the first four months of 2017, a period in which just over 48,000 refugees and migrants entered Europe via these three countries.

HIGHLIGHTS

DTM flow monitoring data compiled from national authorities and IOM offices show that the number of arrivals through Mediterranean routes between January and March 2018 is half the number of arrivals in the same period in 2017. In the first quarter of 2018 a total of 1,956 migrants and asylum seekers arrived in Europe using different land and sea routes, in comparison to 34,531 registered in the first quarter of 2017. As previously reported, the decrease is mainly due to the drop in arrivals in Italy.

Athens – Today (04/05) IOM, the UN Migration Agency, reported that more than 10,000 migrants returned voluntarily and safely to their home countries from Greece between June 2016 and April 2018, with nearly 2,500 eligible migrants receiving targeted reintegration support.

IOM assisted with a total 10,576 voluntary returns to 84 countries and territories over the 20-month period, through an EU and Greece-funded Assisted Voluntary Return and Reintegration (AVRR) programme.

In March, just over 4,400 refugees and migrants entered Europe via Italy,
Greece and Spain. Arrivals to Greece (1,250 versus 2,400) increased by almost 100% while arrivals through routes to Spain (1,500 versus 1,300) and Italy (1,050 versus 1,060) remained consistent with the previous month. In the first three months of the year some 16,640 refugees and migrants arrived to Europe by sea compared to nearly 31,000 that arrived in the same period last year, marking a 106% decrease.
