Introduction

World Humanitarian Data and Trends presents global and country-level data-and-trend analysis about humanitarian crises and assistance. Its purpose is to consolidate this information and present it in an accessible way, providing policymakers, researchers and humanitarian practitioners with an evidence base to support humanitarian policy decisions and provide context for operational decisions.
The information presented covers two main areas: humanitarian needs and assistance in 2016, and humanitarian trends, challenges and opportunities.

The “Ability Sports Festival” brought together over 400 disabled sportspeople and children from across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa for a mega sporting meet organized by the International Committee of the Red Cross and Friends of Paraplegics, among other organizations, at the Hayatabad Sports Complex in Peshawar on Wednesday. The event was part of the upcoming celebrations to mark International Day of People with Disabilities on December 3rd.

Introduction

It is easy to take a toilet for granted – lock the door, do your business, flush when finished, and forget all about it. But for 2.3 billion people worldwide – almost one in three – such a normal part of daily life is out of reach. A lack of decent toilets and clean water causes diarrhoeal diseases that, on average, claim the lives of almost 800 children every day – one every two minutes.

The health impacts of poor sanitation trap people in poverty, making it difficult to get an education or to work to support their families.

The Natural Disasters Consortium (NDC) comprising IOM, FAO, UNICEF, ACTED and HANDS works across the country implementing preparedness, response and recovery interventions. Three years after they were set up, three physical rehabilitation centres have been handed over to the Indus Hospital Network by the ICRC. Over 14,000 people with disabilities have so far benefited from the free, state-of-the-art medical services provided at these centres, located in Lahore, Muzaffargarh and Karachi.

2016 was a challenging year for human rights and democracy, with a shrinking space for civil society and complex humanitarian and political crises emerging. In this context, the European Union showed leadership and remained strongly committed to promote and protect human rights and democracy across the world.
