This report focuses on lessons learned by WFP from the Ready to Respond project, a joint UN humanitarian preparedness programme funded by the UK Department for International Development (DFID).
Ready to Respond was instigated in late 2013 by UNICEF and WFP, who were joined in 2015 by OCHA and UNHCR. DFID’s support enabled the agencies to implement a wide range of preparedness activities, aiming at reinforcing their own capacity and the capacity of partners in being better prepared to respond to disasters.

The Fourth Regional Technical Group meeting on Disaster Management under the Heart of Asia regional cooperation initiative took place today, and resulted in the development of a Confidence-Building Measure (CBM) Road Map for Heart of Asia Countries. The meeting was attended by representatives from all 14 participating countries and six supporting countries. The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) was a technical partner for the meeting, and Mr Sartaj Aziz, the adviser to the Prime Minister on Foreign Affairs and National Security, was in attendance as chief guest.
The Fourth Regional Technical Group meeting under the Heart of Asia initiative took place in Islamabad today. The meeting’s focus was on confidence building measures (CBMs) for disaster management, which is led by Pakistan and Kazakhstan. This year focuses on the establishment of CBM’s road map of the Heart of Asia Countries.

In Syria, the government military continued its offensive on opposition-controlled Qusayr, a strategic city in Homs province connecting the capital to the Mediterranean coast. Humanitarian agencies expressed alarm over the fate of thousands of civilians still trapped in the city. The UN estimates that over 6.8 million people are in need of humanitarian aid in Syria. While an estimated 5 million people are internally displaced, the number of Syrians registered or awaiting registration in host countries has surpassed 1.6 million.

It now includes the country programs missing in the first edition (Burkina Faso, Malawi, Mali, Senegal, and Philippines 1) as well as an update of the DRM Country Program for Haiti (to take into account the impact of the January 2010 earthquake), Panama, Guatemala, Ecuador, Colombia, Costa Rica.
